Staircase to the Moon

The best part of Broome is the nudist beach area, mainly old pharts there, only saw one young couple but that was worth seeing.

Staircase to the moon, use a tripod and DO NOT use flash, turn it off.

Broome is well worth a visit if you have not been before but IMHO once you have seen it you do not have to go back again, its a tourist rip off.

I was told Dogs are not allowed in all caravan parks in Broome, must be left at the local vets, guess who owns the caravan park, so I am told its the vet.

Hi all. I have searched the blue "search" icon but haven't found exactly what I was after . So, would love your thoughts on -------we thought we might head to Broome for " Staircase to the Moon" . Doing a bit of research I'm finding our planned ETA of July will be the peak period and that free camping is frowned upon. Guess my question is, is the Staircase worth it? And I've  also seen that you can view it from Onslow, Dampier, Cossack, Point Sampson and Hearson Cove. Any opinions if those viewing places would be better/same/ok??

In generals would love your thoughts on the whole Broome experience.

thanks

Dianne and Stuart

Broome is definitely worth a few days gooba! Its not cheap at that time of year, but is so interesting with its beautiful Cable Beach sunsets, China-town, the pearling history and modern industry nowadays. The open-air cinema is a must.
But the "Staircase to the Moon" wasn't worth sitting out in the cold wind for half an hour in our opinion!

If your van can handle a dirt road, go out to the Bird Sanctuary too, if not, make it a day trip.

I agree with Wombat Broome is a place to see only once.

China Town has all been pulled down and rebuilt in modern buildings and has lost its appeal also not the Chinese shops of old.

The whole town has been turned into a tourist resort for rich overseas visitors.

We were there in June this year for the first time in about 7 years and very disappointed with the changes done, but that is only our opinion.

We were there in June 2011 on our half lap tour and quite liked it. Found it quite expensive but it's interesting. We stayed a week and that was enough for us. Enjoyed a day trip out to Cape Leveque and Beagle Bay and found that area spectacular.

Loved it all really until I wrecked my hip getting on a b..... camel on Cable Beach. In terrible pain, had to get off and then was refused a refund ($60). So left a bad taste in my mouth as well as a crook hip that still gives me sorrow.

We have been there now and probably won't go back again but it's a place you have to see once.

That's sad. But I agree, once is enough unless you need the shops/doctors/motor repairers etc.

We were in Broome for July this year, absolutely loved it. Supermarkets not much dearer than home.resturant prices on par with most we have been to.(ate out 3times in the month). The stairway to the moon is excellent, take Chairs, nibbles and a good bottle of vino to town beach on the 2nd night. They have markets there during the evening. The boss and I would both go back but it sure is a long way to go. We camped on the beach at middle lagoon for 4nights magic!
All I can say is,read all you can about the area then make up you own mind.I don't think you would every regret going there.

Hello Dianne - I went to Broome on a photography tour - stayed around for a few days doing touristy things as well. I thought the Staircase to the Moon was a great thing to see - also went on a day trip to the Horizontal Falls - that was terrific as well. Willie Creek Pearl Farm another one - there is plenty to see and do - I would go back - hopefully drive next time but I enjoyed the experience of it all. happy camping

Totally agree, one trip is enough in Broome. The Horizontal Falls plane trip is excellent, flight from memory takes about 1hour,flys over Cape Leveque and then lands at the Horizontal Falls.(Sea Plane).Have a beautifull lunch on the houseboat then into a speed boat with 3 BIG engines
and through the falls at speed many times.
The trip was I think from 10am to late afternoon so a big day but worth every penny($1400???)

Would go back just for that trip again. We flew with Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures,we were told they are the best, and after the trip we must agree.Have a great trip.
Cheers Baz

If you are going to Derby, you'll find the Horizontal Falls trip a bit cheaper from there. Derby's a fascinating place too, we enjoyed it, very laid-back.

Broome has been on my go see list since reading the book by Di Morrissey ... Tears of the Moon.  A tale of fiction ... Yes! But gives you a glorified insight into the history of the area and the early pearling industry. Probably appeal more to women than the male of the species .... There is a sequel but not as interesting.

i have also been told Broome is somewhere that you should visit, but once is enough!. Hope to get there next year ...

cheers

Firstly, book in early, the staircase to the moon sells quickly.

Broome, cable beach, the shopping ctrs. surrounds are beautiful, worth a visit.  Perhaps you could purchase a pink diamond or some pearls!!

The best feed is:  Roebuck Bay Hotel: Sunday night Roast nice !!

If you are adventurous, only in the dry season visit Cape Leveque, or go down the Gibb River road to tunnel creek and windjana gorge.

As for the stairway to the Moon, perhaps it wasn't a good night when I went, but I recall thinking, it would be much cheaper to walk down St Kilda pier when the tides out and see the reflection of the light on the sand.  lol lol lol.

Don't let this put you off, Broome is still a stunning visit.

(I loved the Kimberley region and spent many months between Broome, Kununurra and Darwin).

Good luck - Lesley    biggrin  biggrin  biggrin

I nearly forgot, the wet season in Broome, I was eaten alive by midgees (spelling?).  Some of us had over 100 bites.  Never saw the little b..gers, but the itch drove me to distraction.  I was forced to move into the backpackers to get away from them.

Cheers Lesley

Sorry - I meant book accommodation - it's often very busy every full moon.

In case anyone missed me at the stairway phenomena - I was the one howling when the full moon slowly rose into the darkness lol lol

seen about 6 staircases to the moon, the golfclub is a good viewing place as is town beach. Have also dined at the Mangrove and that is a great expeience with the digerdoo playing as the moon comes up. Also not to be forgotten is the early morning rise and watching the staircase to the sun, the effect is the same as the moon with the reflections acroos the wet mudflats. Tourist numbers have been down for the last 5 years and it seems that there are no longer the great ques waiting to get into CPs. we have beenhere 12 months now and reckon maybe this wet season and then pack up and leave after the next wet. The wet season is the best time to be in the Kimberley as long as we get no direct hit cyclones
cheers
