Fraud Warning Beware

I have been helping son Michael sell some of his excess junk on Gumtree.

Within two days had sold his cross trainer for $400.

So on I went putting up one of his cars. 2002 Holden Commodore with 74000 on the clock.

Within 2 hrs I had a txt from a Scott Salter or s.r.salter@aol.com wanted all communication by email with heaps of photos and a final price.

It sounded too suss to me. It's a car, you come look at it if you are really interested.

Discussed with Michael and I decided I would ring the number he had txt me on in the morning

At 1.30M I got a txt from another mobile. Fraud Alert. Don't do any dealings with this s.r.salter@aol.com.

Bummer, this is hard on the phone, lost the bottom to keep writing.
So I immediately deleted this salters txt,
Oh the warning.said he would steal my money. Can't see how he could steal mine. More likely to put ad up with all the photos and steal from some poor unsuspecting buyer who would find after paying there is no car.

The first alert for me would have been the emails address with AOL.
Is anybody still using AOL in Australia, especially as their primary email address?
Cheers Ozjohn.

This is a standard scam when you advertise on Gumtree,,,,,

DON'T REPLY TO ANTHING that either doesn't come through Gumtree message OR has the Aussie 61 prefix.

They are trying to match your data,,, PHISHING,,, when they have enough data to identify you they steal your identity,, and then get to your money.

That was the first question I asked my son ozjohn. It aroused my suspicions also. I hadn't heard of anyone using it recently.

That's interesting Baz. I have always contacted the seller by phone when I've bought anything.
Never gone through the gumtree message.

It is very prevalent,,,,,and there will be variants to come you can bet on it,,, Aussies are too trusting in this regard and you hear tales weekly of hundreds being ripped off,, for heaps of $.

A friend had a phisher when trying to sell a van,,, we played her for weeks by email,,,,, everything we said she had an answer for,,, van was here, there, everywhere, son was sick, she was away overseas,,, called her bluff finally when I said I'd fly from Darwin to wherever the van was and just view it, even from street.

She gave up,,, but it was FUN. all she wanted was his bank details,,, just a minor point eh.

There was an ad on Gumtree SEEKING an ebay seller with a good 100% history rating,,, so they could buy and use that history themselves.

Gumtree nor Ebay was interested when I emailed them.

So the dangers are there, and many don't care.

SO WE NEED TO TAKE CARE.

My gosh, they will try anything won't they?
They won't get me. Trust no-one. That's my motto. They have to prove to me they are legit..

Tha's OK it's the email addy they are after,,, they then have your phone number and email addy and then they'll try to get more from you,,,,,, send you heaps of spam emails, lonely hearts (if female or male and they find out which), offers, cheap travel competions etc etc.

Make sure the phone number has 61 prefix NOT 01 OR 1 FROM THE USA

Same thing happened to me as I've been trying to sell stuff through Gumtree. Gumtree and eBay have parts of their site dedicated to warning people of the scams and recommending what actions to take. It always pays to be cautious

I picked up a campervan today, it was advertised on the trading post site. I had to put my mobile no. in to get sellers no.

I rang and arranged to view. He said he'd had several emails through trading post but didn't answer any. Just deleted.

Today we both attended bank, money transferred from my a/c to his, Papers filled in, Van full of petrol & serviced last week.

Put Myrtle up on gumtree this morning. This afternoon got an email via gumtree to ring Dean and gave his number.
Now that's how it should be done. No complications.

I get these calls all the time - depending on how much time I have on my hands, I often play them along. They say to click here, and then I say I can't find the click point, then progressively feed back to them, mouse click points from either an Apple or a Linux operating system - that confuses the s..t out of them, and by stringing them along for a few minutes adds extra cost to their phone bills. When I get bored I tell them to 'go jump' as MS doesn't have Apple or Linux operating systems.

Other times when I'm too busy, I just tell them to go jump 'You're a scam - I've been a professional MS computer consultant for over 20 years and know way more about PC's than you'll ever know'.
