Any clues please?

Looking at buying an Elgrand e51 grey import.   Anyone here happen to own one or related to an owner please?   Parts are the same as the 3.5 in the Skyline etc but I'm more concerned re longevity, medium to long distance travel comfort and real fuel consumption.   Everything I've googled so far comes up with sales people or Nissan Australia who have no specifications.

I was interested in a grey import to fit out as a camper.

They are heavy the Nisson Elgrande, so heavier on fuel, this was pointed out to me when I was looking, many more on the road now. Due to age of them I decided not to continue. Have generally lower km's driven.

Around Sydney they are sold to folk with 4 + kids, so popular with Islander folk. Very comfortable, luxury driving, I liked them. Seem to be a little femininely styled which is ok once you get used to the look, obviously to Japanese taste.

They are common in NZ, Canada, Russia, England and South American countries. Certainly luxurious interior compared to what's sold here. Have seen leather interiors. I'd like our exterior and their interior...mostly classy.

Gday...

Sorry, but I had never heard of an Elgrand e51 before your post.

But do any of these help?

Thanks guys, I've tried all the websites but can't get specs apart from basic motor size and dimensions.  They go from 1997 up to 2014 (just out) models but I can only find info on a couple of Japanese websites in Japanese.   I'll take the punt and see how it goes.

Unsure as to your reasons for choosing a grey import.

Generally it's to get a less kilometres vehicle at a cheaper price, but it's an older vehicle, which has not been sold new here, so repairs after accident can be hard to source parts for lights, panels, radiator and all that stuff. otherwise you'd buy a vehicle here.

I do know , Edward Lee imports the flashy stuff, must be a market,up to $100,000 vehicles, which you can't buy here. Looked on net. Also put grey import into google place in Sydney I went to had 3 yards...Sydney though.

I think the Elgrand had / has a motor that was in the Nisson Navara but not now. There is a tyre place near me that sells the Elgrands but they are all around 8, 10 years old with low km maybe 70,000 km for $16,990

All of these buyer beware things were because you can't go importing....except for the ..."shaken"...ones, vans, cars in competition with car, van dealers in Aus.

Front seats turn 360 so makes like a captains chair, as the VW T4 & 5 does. Classy interiors, seating slides on the rails to move them back and forth.

One reason I didn't continue was if the radiator needed replacing would be parked up waiting for it to come from Japan, or I found someone who could build one to fit, not available here. Think this happened to someone on here who has a Toyota grey import.

All this would be ok if you're staying around suburbia, but if you're way out could be difficult and very expensive.

Apologise for long post, I have spoken to a couple of people who drive them, both men, didn't particularly like the exterior but needed the extra seating, and they were cheaper than other 7 seaters, but liked the interiors.

Cheers....Robyn

Thanks Robyn, the Elgrand is a current vehicle with the new model 2014 just released in Japan.   2013 models are available here.   The engine is the same as the Skyline, 350 etc.   All running gear chassis etc is from the Navara group.  Panels are available both new and second hand through Nissan and various repairers.   The only thing I can't get independent info on is longevity, ride real time fuel consumption and technical specs. etc.   Whenever I have bought a car, I've spoken to those who have them to get some practical feedback.

G'day Jules, I'll have  look for the translator.   That will go a long way to answering some of my  questions.

It will be great, so long as you can replace parts, see about servicing costs, it will have an interior FAR superior to anything you can buy here.

It will be heavier so use bit more fuel, Japan is a smaller country not so much distance driving, and it'll certainly stick to the road. The dash will look like a jet c0ckpit, with every conceivable option.

The Japanese build a great vehicle, it'll be great, you won't see your vehicle anywhere else. Sort insurance out quote wise before purchase.

check your current services guy for estimate of costs, tyres. ...go for it and put pictures up.

Also check to see if you need to have compliance testing or whether it has already been done for that vehicle. Grey imports still have to meet ADR's or be modified to meet them before they can be registered.

Not only ADR's, but Pollution modifications come into it too, Our laws are pretty heavy and exceed most other countrys,

Make sure you can get it registered here first, You might get stuck with some thing you cant register here,

I have just been thru it importing from the USA, Some of them, Forget it, You just cant register them here,

All the above compliance stuff is done....by the importer and they will register it....all on road costs same as here. They are well and truly on the roads here, now I'm aware of them...I see them...pop out at me.
