G'day all, you'll have to excuse my ignorance once again. Does anyone open the little vent in the top of the caravan (my coromal poptop has one), when should they be used, and what for?
There was one of those vents in our last van. It is used to "pressurise" the van to help keep dust out when travelling gravel roads. We never used ours as we always stick to the bitumen.
I have no idea if they are effective or not.

We have a small front facing front roof vent that is, I believe, intended to cause an air flow thru the van on dusty roads. This is supposed to 'pressurize' the van to stop dust coming in through the gas leak vents on the bottom of the door.
I have rarely used it, but then we don't do dirt roads.
They are supposed to pressurise the van to keep dust out. I tried it once and all we got were dust and bugs! It now remains closed with a piece of styrene foam pushed up into the surround to stop the dripping condensation issues. If on a dusty section of roads I block off the vents around the van with velcroed heavy plastic sheet I made up for them.

We used ours once, got a couple of pebbles in but no dust. When we don't use it, theres a bit of dust near the door vent, easy to sweep out, no worries.
We have used it with it closed and open and there is a definite drop in dust found in the van when it is left open but not sure if you can ever stop that dreaded red dust completely
from infiltrating those nooks & crannies.

It will help keep the dust out and in hot weather helps stop the buildup of heat in the van while travelling, have made up a insect mesh to go onto vent using velcro strips to hold in place but can remove same to open and close vent.
