New Area Code - PLEASE READ Be sure you read this and pass it on.
809 Area Code We actually received a call last week from the 809 area code. The woman said 'Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you- get back to us quickly. I have something important to tell you.' Then she repeated a phone number beginning with 809. We did not respond. Then this week, we received the following e-mail: Do Not DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284, AND876 from the UK . U.S. Australia or Canada ..
This one is being distributed all over the US ... This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call. Be sure you read this and pass it on. They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family member who has been ill or to tell you someone has been arrested, died, or to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc..
In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls.
If you call from the UK . U.S. Australia or Canada , you will apparently be charged a minimum of $2425 per-minute. And you'll also get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. WHY IT WORKS:
The 809 area code is located in the Dominican Republic ....
The charges afterwards can become a real nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.
Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to help them become aware of this scam.
Hey HW no the message is about a current scam that is apparently happening at the moment and my post, is informing you what the scam is about being the area number you should avoid. Unfortunately the large font on my post was how it came out after I copy and pasted it from my email. Apparently it has offended one user which is unfortunate a case of shoot the messenger but I have had worse. I'll just keep on smiling and enjoy this great forum.
This scam has been doing the rounds for almost 20 years. The whole message is the scam. Just Google "809 scam" Every time it gets re-posted the scam lives on.
Scam or not Copper 1, You posted with good Intentions, Most forumites will appreciate your wish to help others, Not to fall for it. so thanks for posting,
However you will always find a negative response from a small minority, I call them the 2%'s , So just keep posting
If people took the time to do a little research before posting stuff on forums and forwarding in emails there would be a lot less scam stuff clogging internet and scaring people.
There are several sites like www.snopes.com to run any suss emails through.
I always check any that suggest to "send to everyone in your address book" or similar or if they sound too amazing to be true (they probably are).
No need to be offended by my comments as all new internet users have to learn somewhere.
Cheers Neil

just a bit of advice, my policy is NEVER open emails like that or ANY emails that have an attachment or ones that have been sent to me with a FW heading.
To allow me to see what emails are on my sever BEFORE I download them to my system I use a program called Mailwasher Pro and it takes care of most rubbish emails or I can delete them BEFORE I download them.
I have been using this since it came out years ago, would not be without it.
There is a free version but it only allows you to have one email address.
As far as the original post is concerned, I stopped reading after a couple of lines, however I was surprised to see the OP hit back a little later with another post in a very large font.
It's poor form to post using all caps (shouting) or very large font of mixed size and colour.
I confess that I also find the colossal fonts annoying. Fortunately my browser has an "emulate text browser" function that reduces everything to a normal size.
