Bull Bar


After our run in with the kangaroo I have been pricing bull bars

We have a 2002/3 Hyundai Terracan

Have quotes from TJM and ARB

 for around $2,200 fitted

This was for an alloy bar.

Was told they can't get steel bull bars for Terracans.

Does anyone know if this is correct?

Try Mr Google. TJM & ARB are only 2 manufacturers. It would be better to have a steel as they carry a winch much better and don't fold as easily but are heavier. Try Ironman. They are a manufacturer/supplier from Melbourne. No affiliation at all just like their stuff.

Irvin bull bars in WA are alloy bar  . Do everything from trucks down. The alloy is supposed to be stronger than steel. Got one out motorhome made from 12mm thick 300mm high channel. They are less expensive that the 4WD dive specialists  as son is getting one for Pajero.

Don't know what prices are reasonable .

Saw an in dependant test on Shu Roo as I was very interested in them. After reading the test results I lost all interest. My opinion only and I tried looking for it again, albeit briefly, but I think it was done by the CSIRO from memory.

When Shoo Roo was new on the market a new owner took over the Budget Rent a car
franchises for western Qld.
Previously most fleet vehicles were fitted with bull bars.
They found renters didn't swerve away from Roos but just hit them.
Lots of bent chassis & written off cars.
The new owner of the franchises fitted Shoo Roos to all new cars.
The number of roo strikes dropped markedly.
Either renters were being more careful without a bull bar
( here would have to be some unavoidable strikes ) or
the Shoo Roos were doing what they were supposed to do.
Either way, the franchise owner swore by the virtues of Shoo Roos
and kept fitting them to his fleet.
I had one on my trike ( sold now ) and never collected a roo.
No cast iron proof that the roos heard it & bolted.
Just never had a roo continue towards me.

I fitted the cheapo plastic anti-roo stick-on ones at Charleville Qld. after some near misses. Found they not only spooked roo's but crows and cattle off the road.

It's strange isn't it?   I've used a  few work cars with the $10 plastic 'roo scarer'  and they APPEAR to work.   I'm often on the road around sunset/sunrise (roo time) and (coincidently or otherwise) they move off the roadside (it could be that they don't like my face; similar to S.W.M.B.O.).   A small tip with bull-bars...Make sure that the bull-bar is WEAKER than your vehicle's chassis.   This is difficult to do if your car has 'monocoque' construction (no full framed chassis) which most modern vehicles have.   If your bull bar is stronger than the chassis or sub-frame, then any inertia will be transferred to the weakest point causing the chassis or sub-frame to buckle.  In Victoria, all sharp projections (bull-bars, bumpers, tow bars, bike racks etc, etc), must be rounded off to a 50mm curve.

Agree they work,, try this test for yourself BUT rememeber they must be in airflow and the top of the van/4by may be in a vortex or low pressure area.

Test,, drive through heaps of roos without them. Then fit and drive through roos with them, note what happens.

Roos look up to see what the noise is, and generally bolt.

I've come close, so don't think they are 100%, as the "bolters" who cross the road in the bush are the wildcards,, just like bulls and buffalo.

I thought I had lost mine a few years ago (they were siliconed to front bumper) as roos didn't look up one day. Both were blocked with dirt and insects,,, clean em and they worked till I sold the car.

Further on bull bar.

Had an ARB steel bull bar fitted to my last Hilux 4x4 in Brisbane and found when getting a winch fitted at Charleville Steel Works ( did chassis repair at same time) that a special plate had to be obtained from ARB to fit it. Engineer fabricated one for me.

I checked the Smart Bar website and they dont make bars to fit Hyundai Terracan , otherwise I would have recommended trying them . I swear by Smart Bar . When they were developing them back in the 90's they fitted them to there tank delivery trucks (Team Poly ) . I saw 1 at Cobar that had hit a bull at 100kph , the mounts were bent and the bar was out of shape but next to no damage to the truck (5 ton Hino) . When I saw the bar the next morning it had returned to oringal shape as the material used has a memory
