China or melamine?

Corelle for us, not plasticy with most of the benefits of china, light weight and break resistant.

As far as glasses  is concerned we use, glass, we both dislike drinking from plastic, metal and the like, wine is also a visual experience, nowadays decent glasses can be bought pretty cheaply so the odd breakage is no big deal.

My vote is for stainless steel insulated mugs, wine glasses and plates. Wouldn't use anything else on the road.

I have used stainless steel insulated mugs and I hate the taste from them. I'd hate to use them to eat food off of them...yuk.

I've used plastic and melamine in the past but changed to Corelle when I got the van.

I just bought one large plate, one smaller, a bowl and a breakfast dish. I couldn't find any proper Corelle mugs anywhere, and someone on here said they weren't making them anymore, and to search the 2nd hand shops, which I did everywhere I went. Eventually someone on here gave me two. If that person is reading this, I'm so sorry that I've forgotten who you are, but I still appreciate it muchly. biggrin

I use the non slip stuff between the plates while on the go, and wrap the mugs with bubble wrap. If the bubble wrap ever disintegrates, I'll use stubby holders.

As for drinks, I have a melamine tumbler and a stainless steel wine goblet which I got at a 2nd hand shop.

Funny, I don't like the stainless steel to drink tea out of but have no problem with wine in it.

Whilst I am sure the controversy and fallout over the baby formula and melamine issues out of China some years back have been resolved and food safety  safeguards and standards are in place i would still be wary about any possible problems in the future that may affect melamine dinnerware.

Yes, it is a different manufacturing process and uses different components and probably would not affect dinner wear, but who knows? For me it will always be  china/crockery or corralle. Also i have only occasionally used metal dinner wear and dont think I would go down this path, but I have no problems with a glass of Chardy out of a pewter wine glass ... Keeps it cold!

oh well, how could it happen again??  Who ever heard of China being a forerunner in the manufacturing arena .... Never happen ...!!!   Or could it?

just playing the Devils Advocate.

I didn't even think of that, I just don't like it.

Beth, I remember this,  think it may have been either Cruising Granny before she went back to Adelaide, or Ma, who is no longer on the forum.

We're with you  .. Hate eating or drinking from plastic.

Corelle ware is actually glass.  Just drop a piece & see how it shatters.  Witnessed a lady do that in a supermarket once.  Shards everywhere.

We have storage racks for all of our crockery & glassware.  Ample cupboard space in the Jayco.  No packing up tasks or breakages.

We do have 4 Melamite mugs hanging from cup hooks but rarely use them.  Too embarrassed by the tea/coffee stains that we have been unable to remove.

Corelle is 3 layers of specially treated glass, according to my (noe exactly exhaustive) research, so it will shatter. We are getting a set anyway, once we agree on a pattern hmm

They do have cups - but we will stick with china, we both like our coffee.  Besides which, the cups we have have sentimental value.

Thanks for the pointers guys, I am off to do battle over patterns evileye

Corelle for me too. Started with Melamine and didn't take long to swap to Correlle. I brought square plates and bowls which fit better in the van cupboards from Kmart.

Ohh, do yours match ours.  We have white, with black swirls,

biggrin  nah, mine are plain white. K mart special, which I brought two of each. Don't know why.......hoping grumpy might one day tag along.

Since the pattern is now required ;) it's Corelle, square, Eloquence (green swirls) here.

Came with the matching mugs, which are porcelain. The mugs are made in Japan and the plates are made in New York.
