RE: Myrtles Latest Drama

Its the dollars that worry me too Judy.
Thank you QueenKombi. Very informative and I will be reading it out to the mechanic John when I go back at lunch time.
As I did JC's post earlier. When I read JCs out he said he wanted to do that yesterday but knew I was on a tight budget.
Not knowing exactly what the problem is but knowing there is a problem with a valve, he will start with the compression test and work through to find it.

On the subject of whether or not to use valve saver, everyone seems to have a different opinion. Any mention of the subject usually opens a can of worms as is testified in this post I looked up..........

"As a mechanic I have never used or recommended the use of lead replacement additives, and I'm yet to see any evidence that they improve valve-train life. I usually stay out of discussions on this 'can of worms' topic as I know some people go to a lot of trouble to fit flashlube etc to protect their engines. IMO these companies are praying on unknowing motorists who still have doubts about running their older cars on unleaded fuel. I have a V8 Torana that I have intentionally run on ulp without valve lube for well over 12yrs now to show people how unnecessary it is."

One question to ask is what's in a particular product? There is no information on the label of Flash Lube. Someone at a parts store where I used to buy it told me it was mostly automatic transmission fluid!!

A Google search will provide lots of sites dedicated to their "valve saving product" but few technical sites concerning it's long term use.

I thought I wrote results on here before but for some reason it hasn't posted.
All well and as others have said on here this forum and it's members are allso helpful, knowledgeable and caring. A lot of us wouldn't be able to stay on the road if it wasn't for all of your help.
In fact if I hadn't bothered writing on here last night, I would have driven back to Vic and hoped for the best. Maybe would have been vehicleless by the time Igot there.
Couple of things to mention while it's clear in my head.
Mechanic John did say you could easily use Automatic transmission fluid in place of the valve saver, so QueenKombi you must be right about that.
Also this had only just started to cause a problem He last did service in June before I went down for birth of grandson and ran well on way back.
He certainly didn't Ned the work dibs. Squeezed me in this morning when I we t back with this forum in hand. No appointment and other jobs waiting were pushed back.
The compression test showed #4 low and he did reset /adjust the gap? that jc mentioned in his first post. Forgotten the terminology.
Miracle it was something quick and easy and she's running well.
With the amount of problems with Myrtle over the last 2 and half years no wonder I have such a high amount of posts.lol

I feel pleased and happy for you Marj. It certainly was the GN forum at its best.

Wish my problem was as easily fixed. They also looked at that to fix mine.

Great news indeed Marj. Not uncommon for a tappet to tighten up after the head has been off/ engine recently re-built etc.

Glad it was something simple and many happy and safe miles to youwink

Yes, Dazren. Didn't get much sleep last night. I felt really defeated about it all.
JC I bow to you. So knowledgeable about so many things. Maybe I need to do a tagalong with you and Leonie. Every day when we stop I could give you little jobs to do.
There are so many wonderful helpful people on here who have helped me along the way.
To all the new members out there, do come on and ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask any question no matter how trivial you might think it is.
Kiwi-as, I do hope you get yours fixed soon so you can get back on the road.
