Extended towing mirrors

Extended towing mirrors are required where the vehicles existing mirrors cannot provide a clear view past the caravan or trailer.

Is this not the operative word - all very well to see down the sides of your van - but can you see past it as well ?  The question you should ask yourself I think.

You nailed it Jules,,, can't see how a Ford Territory would comply,,, I know my daughters doesn't allow you to see past the side of a 2.4m van without extension mirrors.

The number of posts stating legal requirements and how to comply with them is concerning. Legal requirements are not achievement targets they are only ever minimum requirements, Surely your own safety and security is more important than satisfying the minimum legal requirement. Rather than asking what is legally required or twisting an d squirming to find a way of avoiding these requirements, we should be asking what provides the highest degree of protection to me, to people traveling with me, to my property and to others traveling on the same roads as me. Arguing that you complied with the minimum legal requirements provides cold comfort when you're lying in a hospital bed for weeks or even worse for your family if you're dead ad if you think this can't happen to you then your living in a fools paradise.

Whether it's law or not , there is a thing called " common sense " . Unfortunately not everybody has it .

Common sense, just another Aussie Icon that got sold off overseas & we got Jack S#!t for it.

Agree with the thrust of what you are saying above,,, however please don't knock those who are pointing out legal things that people can understand (I don't think it is your intention). What is required legally can mean the difference of a fine, loss of insurance etc etc.

Agree whole heartedly that we should, in the case of mirrors, do the best we possibly can to suit each application, but it still must be legal.

We went shopping today, out of the 6 caravans we saw being towed 4 did NOT have extension mirrors and they definitely needed it. I now can't help but look for this now.

I've only just found this post, so I thought I'd put my two bobs worth in.

I have extended mirrors for my i30, not sure of the width of the nipper, but I'd be totally freaked out if I didn't have the extra mirrors. Yes, I can see down the sides of the van, but I need the extended to see BEHIND the van. Even if I had a rear view camera, I'd still used the mirrors.

From my observations, I don't think there'd be many vehicles that'd be wide enough to not need extended mirrors.
