welcome Wriman.
As you as starting from Perth in May it is a great time to head North and do all the top of Oz by Sept then head south for the summer. There will probably have lots of grey nomads with the same plans but that's the best time to be north.

In 2012 we spent July to Nov in out back QLD - only as far up as Winton then Hervey Bay, Toowoomba, and Roma. As we came through St George mid Nov it was 38 at 11am. Sure were glad to get further south after that. Stayed in Victoria till mid Feb then across SA and down Eyre Peninsula (great free camps) but was hot at times  - in Perth late March - now at Pardoo Station till end of Nov then hope to spend summer around Esperance

I would take on board what Duh has posted re your query, to get into the north of QLD in the wet season is not a good idea unless you really want to see what water falls are all about.

Most days it is wet although it is still hot,it becomes very humid and living in a van in that type of climate can become tedious. Another thing to remember is a lot of the roads get cut and a lot of the touristy things are closed down until the dry season..

We intend to travel around Australia in our caravan next year, leaving Perth around May.  We would like to make this an approx 12 month trip.  Any suggestions on where we should start?  Should we travel north via the west coast, across the top and down the east coast?  Where should we be at certain times of the year to avoid extreme weather conditions?  We would appreciate your suggestions and advice.

Welcome Wriman, enjoy here and out in the play ground.

In my opinion it doesn't really matter if you do it clock wise or anti clockwise either way works. From what I have read on here you will be leaving at the right time, after the wet season is done and dusted. Just make sure you're out of Queensland about this time next year as it starts to get pretty hot from now on. Going on what you have said you will be anyway.

Grab a copy of 'Camps Australia Wide' to take advantage of some great alternative and free camps, I have edition 7 with the pics and it is great. The pics just give you a bit of a hint of what you are heading into.

If you do use the free camps make sure you're 12 volt system in the van is in top nick and if possible test it all out before hand, unless you have already done all the test runs.

 Wow don't go up there in the wet season NnR.

I reckon going north in May from Perth is the only way. If you head East it will be bloody cold before you get north again.

We are heading off round Aust in May but from Newcastle. Not sure how long it will take to get to The NT. When we get to Three Ways we will decide if we go left or right.

 Generally speaking, using the Tropic of Capricorn as a guide, whatever state your in go north in winter, and south in Summer, give or take a month or two either side.

As you know the weather in WA has been atrocious, the worst September I have ever experienced, however early this month we did the wildflower circuit north/east of Perth and the rotten weather wasn't reaching inland, nice fine sunny days, great for the tourist but not good for the farmers.

As another GN said here, May is not a bad month to be heading north of WA, the across from there etc.  My trips around Oz have usually started around May heading north.
