printer problem

Hi all, I have a HP F2100 multifunction inkjet printer that is playing up. It takes forever to print anything yet last time I used it was as good as usual. I tried using it with the laptop with the same results. I have removed the driver and programs and then re-installed it but same thing is still happening. Anyone know a solution other than going to the PO and buying a new one. Just put new cartridges in a few pages ago and very few interchange .....its a definite con there

I bought a HP printer a while back when my Canon finally died after years of faithful service.   Never again.  Threw it out after about a month, and have gone back to Canons'.   Much more reliable, and can get re-fills much cheaper.

The HP2100 is getting a bit ancient. What Windows platform are you using ? Up to Windows XP it should be OK. I'd suggest re-install it and if that doesn't work, buy a HP cheapie at the Post Office. If you are running Windows 7 or 8, you will need to download additional Drivers from the HP website. I've just had this experience. I just arrived at my home overseas a few weeks back, and here I have a HP Deskjet F2275. My new laptop has Windows 7. Downloading the additional Drivers solved my problem.

Does the printer have an in-built self test page? If so, does this print slowly, too?

Is it possible that the slow speed is related to the image quality setting, either offline or via software?

If you select the lowest image quality, does this speed up offline copying? Copying doesn't require that data be processed by your PC and then sent down the USB interface.

If you select two copies, does the second copy print faster? If so, then this would point to a buffering or interface issue.

If you select a lower print resolution in your software, does it improve the print speed?

When you say that the print speed is slow, are you referring to the left-to-right movement of the print head, or are you referring to the paper feed speed, or both?

First to answer Dorian yes it has and yes it does also print slowly. As to the reply from Sheba it has always performed well prior to this and I bought it because of the canon rubbish I had previously.  No need to give opinions if you can't help with the problem just to get the post count up. Big G yes it is old but is used on my old XP desktop for printing out plans and info when needed as I re-fill my own as I get the ink by the litre. This time I put in new cartridges just in case that was the trouble. I am wary of a lot of the new stuff as they tend to have counters on the cartridges and can be a pain when using refills. I have been building computers since the early 80's but first time I had a problem with a printer that the usual things don't fix it. Googled it with no success so thought I would try here just in case hoping techies corner had a techie or clever person that may have had the same problem with a printer of any brand or knew of a fix for it.

 Pete, you are obviously computer literate.  Problem with these old printers, they are too expensive to repair. They are really a throw away item today, and  are so cheap because you get ripped off buying the ink. If you can find a reliable refiller you are halfway there, ignoring all the pop ups that tell you the cartridges are fake etc. You might have to bite the bullet and go spend 50 bucks....

Stopped using my HP printer ,,, BUT when online previously it went into a constant "loop" of calling HP for updates and consequently wouldn't run when I was connected to internet. Took me ages to sus this one out.

Turn off auto updates as a possible solution, or try offline only???

My first inkjet printer was a Canon in 1991. Cost me $1100. How times have changed.

Dorian thanks for the link...already checked it. Big G I hate throwing things out due to a small problem....a throwback to earlier days. Still $40 or so at the PO is looking good.

I'll strip out the old one for bits for my model engineering hobby as they have some good metal rods in them and toothed belts :)

in the printer settings under qualities there is 3 settings available
best fast normal i know tha the diff between normal and fast is approx 3 times
at least on my hpc6180 all in one

All good purchased a new printer from the PO a HP DJ2510. I see they also have a Brother laser printer for $49 a well.
