A male person was hit by a truck in Ipswich and killed by hit run driver last night . The road on which this poor man was killed has cameras covering the the road on which it happen , Within hour a man from some 70 klm away was charged and will appear in court on Monday , Police have not said how they caught the man but having the camera would have been a big help , Big brother doing good work .
Glad they caught him and as you say big brother doing good work.
I am told that Ipswich has more CCTV coverage than anyplace in Qld with more to be installed. The crime rates have dropped and allegedly lots of undesirables have moved away from the area.
Ipswich was one of the first city in Australia to use city cam now have moved them to major road links around the city and has had a big impacted on amount of crime in the city and crime cleanup rates for the area
You'd put cameras into the basket with other tools to harden target areas against crime. They do not prevent crime but move it elsewhere. When bank security was hardened with those fast drop-down screens and so on, only the dedicated hard men remained and the remainder shifted to other targets. It rolls down hill. Criminals do not give up their vocations. It is only the police they fear.
I would dispute though that the ordinary citizen is made any safer by cameras. For example the unemployed thugs who work out in home gyms through the week and come into town Friday and Saturday nights to beat up young men who are trying to make something of their lives, still do their nasty work. They have a good eye for opportunities where security is weak. Some don't care either. Although cameras are welcome in areas where people congregate and might sometimes provide evidence to catch an offender after the crime. The newsworthiness of the hit and run story might suggest that cameras are not as effective as suggested even in detecting offenders.
In Brisbane's Valley, the night venues are still run by criminals who are notorious with police and journalists although young people do not seem to advised of the fact. Bikie enforcers work the doors and bars. The drug dealing and assaults in the clubs and alleys continue just as it was before the Royal Commission years ago. After hours the Valley is just one of many places where young people go to get tipsy and socialise but the police are reluctant to get out of their cars (no support available).
What is needed is well trained professional police force on the ground, coupled with strong cooperation between levels of government. Problem is that there is so much money flowing from drugs that corruption permeates through all of society. Which is why someone who is so opposed to drugs as I am would reluctantly support the legalisation of small privately held amounts of Marijuana, which would cut one of the big money-makers for drug gangs.
We get cameras instead of trained police and instead of more nationally coordinated effort to nail drug gangs.
Back when Adam was a boy there was crime, each generation makes changes to their world of crime, but the world has gotten smaller so we have other countries criminals in the mix.
No matter what we do there will always be crime. It will never end....:((( No matter how good our police...
But there are more good people than bad, and we have to continue with our lives and trust us and ours will be safe. Otherwise we would be chucking the towel in and letting crime rule.
Night venues have been run by criminals almost if not forever.
AND how many of us have been fascinated to watch Underbelly...so we make them heroes.
John has the right idea..."Guess I jest better keep rite on travellin" :)
I was an operator in the Ipswich camera system for several years.
The equipment is the most advanced available.
It is incredible how much good the system does.
( I would suggest that the rego.plate recognition cameras may have played a role
in the initial entry.)
One of the worst areas for random crime in the Ipswich CBD is a public transport hub
& has hotels, food outlets & a methadone clinic. Before Safe City all sorts of nasty
things went on. In the past few years the crime has dropped dramatically.
Yes, the yahoos misbehave elsewhere but there are cameras there now.
You would be surprised & impressed how much gets put before the magistrates
thanks to the cameras.
What the magistrates do with the evidence is a whole other debate.
Yes, more police are needed. Tell it to the politicians.
Cameras aren't the ultimate answer but a very useful tool.
I am proud to say that I believe I did tangible good in the time I was there.
Unfortunately, sometimes you see things that no one should have to see.
That is why I am no longer there.
They are distinctive, stand alone cameras, well out of reach.
Look up,you'll see 'em. As many drunks do,then sometimes need a little sit down.
I think the latest count is around 300 cameras in the Ipswich area.
There are so many safeguards in place it is impossible to alter
or erase footage recorded.
