Lake Batyo Catyo, Vic - camps 6 #497

Reading about Lake Batyo Catyo on another forum and appears it was the topic of the year regarding the place. Very interesting reading.

Why it has not much water would probably be due to it only holding water 6 out of 10 years.

Another nice camping area not that far away from there is Wooroonook lakes.

I read the posts on the forum last year about this spot closing down. We have been travelling since mid-April and are now on our way home, so we decided to come and see if the place was still operating. We arrived yesterday, there are no other campers here. Someone still comes and mows the grass but the caretakers cottage is all boarded up, facilities are open (although they have padlocks in place).  Strangely the power has not been cut off and water tanks are full. Sadly there is very little water left in the lake and there are lots of dead fish. The camp sites are lovely with plenty of grass and so very peaceful.  We will probably stay here for another day or so unless someone comes and tells us to move on.  Such as shame it is all going to waste. I just Googled the lake and came up with this story, albeit 12 months old.

Wow. What a blast from the past! I'd almost forgotten about the place until I saw the post heading.

Around 28 years ago, I was visiting friends near Birchip and they took me out to have a B-B-Q at the lake. I remember it as little more than a huge marsh area with only smallish swimming holes which were filled with dirty coloured water which smelled like rotting mud. I did have a swim in it, but only because the day was so hot, however it wasn't one of my most pleasant experiences. Sounds like a lot has happened there since those early days.

Reading on another forum regarding this camping area, there was more going on than the Mayor said in that press release.

I doubt it will ever get a make over.

Hello All

Went to this camp site over the weekend and found it in a sorry state.   Going by the locals the Vic Government has decided to close it down.   It is only a puddle at the moment with dead carp on the shore line.

Currently all the amenities are locked and boarded up with the exception one male and one female toilet near the shoreline.   They have not been cleaned for months, maybe years.

Apparently the lake does hold water anymore.   It seems strange when the lake beside it is alright.   It may be cross draining naturally.

We can now cross this site off the list.

Happy Caravanning

Have been here this week.........though the grass has been mowed.nothing else been looked after....I had to get my broom..and clear a path to get into the unlocked toilets..from spider webs.and litter on the floors of each.....this is at the main amenities building near the caretakers building.....there is no hot water...for showers..there seems plenty of water .mains and rainwater..toilets flush....but there is no power or lighting..........power is off at the 6 power poles....no water in dry lake....but grass is green

pitty this was once a great site...
