Something we never learned ?

As a teacher I did teach that. You can also do 9x with your fingers starting with 1x9. Hold all fingers up then put down left hand thumb - 9 fingers left.
2x9 - put down second finger only = 1 (thumb) and 8 fingers up = 18
3x9 third finger down = 2 up and 7 down = 27 etc

Also look at the answer to each and the two digits added always equal 9!

The first digit of the answer is always one less than what you are multiplying by.  Magic!

Do they still teach the times table? I learnt it by rote and repeated it like a parrotbiggrin

Had a talk with my son on this to see what the grandchildren were learning. Times tables was not on the agenda.
They all have phones with a calculator so why should they strain their brain cell to learn times tables, let along english and how to spell.

Everything is on the internet, even if it is not quite correct.

I was taught at a very young age that in the 9 times table if the answer don't add up to 9 it is wrong

That table is an eye-opener for me too. Like Bryan, I learned the times tables by rote and repeated it parrot fashion. Repetition can be useful though. My first job included adding long columns of numbers and after a month or two, I could whizz through a long column in no time flat.
