Meet up register

This may be somewhat superfluous. There are, I'm sure many of out there who are not full, or even part time at this stage, nomads but are happy to offer their hospitality to any nomads passing by. Perhaps someone more techno savvy than I can set up something where people can add their names by location. I live in Gin Gin (Qld), very close to the highway, and always happy to welcome nomads for a cuppa (or stronger), shower, do some washing etc. as they are passing through.

Cheers,

Jack

That's a great idea count more in but how could you keep the info secure, perhaps a little difficult to manage but I would love to see it happen.smile

I think it would be a safer idea if when you saw someone was heading your way (taking it that they mention it in a post) that you PM them to offer hospitality. That is what we have done a few times and have consequently hosted several GNs on their travels. That keeps your info secure.

Why not just register with at couchsurfing.org.  While to date it's mostly a young ppl's site, a few members are wrinklies.  In my view CS needs more mature members - travel is the common feature, age is just another cultural difference.

I am looking forward to a young German coming to stay tomorrow, and I have stayed with hosts (or hosted) in China, UK, France, Portugal.  And if there are hitch hikers (sadly quite a rarity these days) I pick almost all of them, but I digress!

I, like I'm sure many others, don't always see the posts of where people are heading and some don't put in every town they are going through.

I don't see a problem with security most of us already have our location on our profile.

All I'm suggesting is spreadsheet type of affair with Location: i.e  Gin Gin and member name: Jackmac.

Members if going through a particular area can then look up towns in their itinerary and PM the said member if they are interested.

It seems it's a bad idea for matters of privacy.

I didn't realise it was so hard to become a member and access information.

Those that are worried don't have to put their name on the register.

I'm sure for those out there who want to access info about people, I'm sure they would have the computer literacy without having to resort to this forum.

Just y two bob's worth.

(common-sense privacy issues aside) I agree!! Its a great idea to consider, JackMac.

I'm still trying to sell where we live (i.e. fully functional and welcoming home on acreage in far Nth NSW) before heading out 'into the playground'....

and meanwhile I would welcome any chance to catch up with GN members, either here or 'hereabouts'; especially for mutual benefit.

I just dont know what it is that works best for all concerned hmm......

so, for now, a PM on this forum is a good start, I reckon.

Maybe another forum heading - and then sub-divided into states so you can put your info. Just a town then members could PM for the details.

You don't need to put your home town on your profile, just your general area. If you are travelling then post your whereabouts and direction. You can often meet up with people by pm-ing and making arrangements privately.
Advertise gathering or meet-up plans in "Get Togethers", that is what its for as I understand it.

Nothing is private on the web.

A slight improvement thought:

The concept of a map of people who are willing to offer is good it can also lead to security issues.

This:

http://ozcamps.net/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=29

as mentioned by Bob, (florinhill) could have some security issues.

The suggestion of a map just indication location/town one lives in is possible as close as you can get.

This is such an example:

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?1006-NissanPatrol.com.au-Members-Map

Notice the map only provides user names.

NOTE: The Nissan patrol map is public access, and user profile details are have a limited public display.

If you want to tighten security off information then hide it behind a wall that can only be passes if you log in.

Thus using such a map, if you know your intended route one can by using this PM people who have indicated they are happy to accommodate fellow GN guests

When I was travelling south, I posted where I was heading and asked that anyone in the area, and wanting to meet, to PM me.

Or sometimes I've remembered the general area where someone lives, and PM'd them myself.

But a register of some sort would be good too. Not everyone has the space/facilities to invite GN's to stop over, me being one. But I've directed a few to nearby CP's and gone to meet them.

It's wise to be cautious about security though and just state your general area.

As in, I'm between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Jackmac, I'll get up that way again some time. wink

That's a good idea - it could be kept 'private' by only listing:

Name........Jacko
Location....Salisbury Brisbane.
Mobile.......04xxxxxxxx
Offer.........cuppa, some mechanical help, local advice.

Then if one is heading to the big smoke and was unsure about something or whatever they would just ring the mobile number and it goes from there.

This is similar to one offered by Jaglovers.org for their club members - Jaguar owners are always poor so no chance of robbing them.

Good Luck.

I think you need to be careful of making blanket offers of hospitality, and finding people turn up and you are off travelling yourself.

The listed details need to be broad, and not specific enough for someone to turn up unannounced, find you're not home, and when you do come home there's a problem.

Hako, you should only ever give your phone number to anyone through PMs, never on the forum itself.

I've recently learnt a hard lesson about privacy and security. You'd be amazed at the info people can pick up on this forum, or any open forum for that matter. Makes no difference if one is a member or not.

Hako do not ever put private details such as an address or phone number on an open forum.  You are asking for trouble Pal.

With due respect, why is putting your mobile number asking for trouble. The White Pages has my name, address and home phone number and it's available online at whitepages.com or at any public telephone box. My mobileaddress is not listed anywhere.
If I sell something on Gumtree or the local paper my mobile number goes there.
If I visit the RACQ before they serve me I must state my name, address and date of birth at the counter for all and sundry to hear.

Please read my post again - it has the username not the persons name - it has suburb not address - it has the mobile number that is (generally) not able to be reverse traced to an address.

As always I'm willing to learn.

Regards

I seem to have caused somewhat of a stir. Wasn't intended.

I don't see the problem. Any member on this forum can contact other members via a PM. All I was suggesting was if you want to put your name (user name) on a register with your area, nomads passing through can PM you if they wish. It is then up to the particular person if they wish to respond positively.

I never suggested putting addresses, phone nos. out there for all to see.

We can't always follow each persons itinerary and sometimes people don't post every little detail of their travels, but would be happy to welcome them if passing through.

I have been fortunate to have had a few nomads visit me. They all know where I live they know my dog and I wouldn't suggest for a minute that there is anything to worry about. We all have neighbours etc. who I'm sure know enough about our habits etc. to be more of a threat than any members of this forum.

Until I can afford armed guards and a moat I'll have to put a bit of faith in others.

Cheers,

Jack

it's okay Jack. I got it.

And I wasn't talking about the danger of our GN's but there are people out there who will use your info for also sorts of unscrupulous reasons. I just think it pays to be cautious, but each to their own. FYI anyone else, I've met Jack/John too and he's a nice bloke who wouldn't hurt a fly. wink

I think for the unscrupulous out there, they have many other ways of identity theft etc., what with just about everything about us on a computer database somewhere.

Old Joke:  with apologies to the ladies

First bloke: Someone stole my credit card.

Second fellow: Why didn't you report it?

First bloke: He spends less than my wife.

Cheers.

 Hi Beth,

I might hurt a fly, I just haven't been able to catch one.

So........any take-up on Jack Mac's "meet-up-register" suggestion?    Maybe it could be catered for by allowing forum member to put their location on their username/avatar like in many other forums. I'm on the FordForums.com and Commodore.com forums, both of which you can include your location and have been contacted by members in my area dozens of times for help/advice/loan of tools. I've never been taken advantage of despite most members on those forums being in the "young and irresponsible" age group.
What I'm going to do is add my location (Toowoomba) to my signature.....so there!!eyepopping.gif

And maybe if you have room for someone to park up at your place. I don't have, but I'm happy to meet up with anyone passing through Gold Coast/Brisbane southside.
