Caravan Insurance

As never owned a Van before we are soon to the proud owners of a New Van.
Can anyone advise us of a preferred insurance company or do "clubs" receive better deals for their members.
Basically, "Whats the best way to go about insuring your van".
Your assistance will be gratefully received. Thank You.

Insurance the necessary evil I always look around for the best deal last time it was AAMI this time it looks as if NRMA might edge out the competition. I treat getting insurance green slips etc like a days work I get on the phone and get all the info and go with the best deal. Just because you might have your car and house insured with say XYZ insurance company does not mean they will give you a good deal. Why just this morning I was talking to a family member who changed electricity company's. Now they like us pay money off each fortnight and are always in credit like us the difference being, they get a $13 rebate for being in front or paying early and a $60 credit for being on the pension!!!! Guess what is on my next hit list!!! Anyway in short do your homework and go with what's best for you.

Hi regopie welcome to the forum I am sure you will get a number of responses and I believe it is a personal decision as different policies have different levels of cover and costs

There can be obvious benefits in using the insurance company that you have the tug with as you may get multi vehicle/policy discount I have moved around different companies over the years and for the last couple the GIO have been best price for me, but need to check each year and you can get a comparison between companies on the net.

I use RACV for all our insurence. Being a gold member it is the cheapest for us, and you never hear any bad stories about them not paying out like many others.

Same goes for us. Every year I do the chase around but RACV comes in tops even with agreed value.

Apart from the Insurers mentioned, the main Motorhome/Caravan Insurers are CIL; MHIA; Ken Tame & Assoc. The latter you are required to be a member of CMCA. You can Google all of these for details. I was previously with Ken Tame, however after a Claim, which was not my fault, they moved the Goal Posts and increased my premium by 34.5% instead of protecting my Rating 1. Not to worry. I've just informed them I wont be renewing and got a better deal from APIA. I'd suggest you shop around and get a few quotes before committing.

I use Ken Tame, I have made 2 minor claims, never any problems, $200 excess is pretty good. car and van combined was under $1000. Will wait and see what next years premium is

People hi

Last month repaid our caravan insurance with RACQ was with them last year, deal done when  the lady said that's "market value" I went "no agreed", she saids no never to agreed only. put phone down started again.

Short story van insured for a little over market value, The end is I am not happy but it is insured, still with RACQ.

so be warned.

Ive been out today and just walked back in.
What a surprise to see so many replies to our question.
THANK YOU to all of you for the valuable information.
I know if I was an insurer I would certainly get onside with the various groups and clubs and get a deal drawn up for all the van owners.
However,It looks like its best to do some shopping so thats what we will do.Most quotes only seem to last 30 days so we may have to wait a bit until we get word that the van is on its way.
Thanks again to everyone.
[Just as a point of interest you may be interested in a few quotes for $80k  [ 70 for van,7 for contents and 3 for annexe ]
Range so far from $800 to $1400.]
CHEERS!!!!

RACV definitely do agreed value so not sure why RACQ don't. As far as cost for the van, we are away from home at the moment so can't tell you but off the top of my head around $60k agreed and was $650 or thereabouts.

Yes definitely shop around.....EVERY year!

To "aussietraveller" and "neilnruth" and in fact to everyone. Thanks heaps for the warm welcome and advise. Who knows we may cross paths in the future and Im sure from what I am seeing its going to be a lot of fun.
Its probably going to be 12 to  18 months before we hit the frog n toad properly. We will do a couple of small legs to work out the do's n donts and iron out the bugs.
We have the RAC here and they came back with $1200. But as suggested I will continue the shop.
I guess they all cover about the same?? GIO seemed to be great to talk to and covered storm, flood, fire theft and even if you back into a tree!!! an only $100 excess. Even if it has to get towed back to WA.
I can't thank you all enough. It seems this forum is one not to be missed.
Cheers everyone.

Hi Big Gorilla,

From memory if you pay an extra $15 on top of your premium with KT that will hold your rating 1 if you have an accident.

Hi Peter. They offered me Rating 1 protection for $33.00 a year. I didn't take it up. I have a Rating 1 and it is automatically protected, without payment if I am deemed to be the no fault person. I had a rather complicated claim and was deemed to be "No Fault". However my Rating 1 was lost because the claim I lodged was "Unrecoverable".  They moved the Goal Posts. I was not at fault which should have protected my Rating according to their documentation, but because they couldn't recover the monies they paid out, they penalized me by removing my Rating 1. Some details of my "Accident" are here:
