Calliope RiverQld Southern Side Closed.

The Southern side of the Calliope river is now closed to all camping ,Posted from Gladstone city council (11/7/2013 )

At this stage the Northern side is still open.

Closest dump point to here would be at corner of Taragoola Rd & Dawson H/Way.Calliope.

Didn't it get badly flooded a while ago and a bit of damage done. I don't think the top side was affected.

Think it is due to the last lot of flooding, but councils don't really have to have an excuse to close free camping. It just appears to be more than the last lot of floods we had up this way as that was 7 odd months ago,one would think it is more to do with a lot of the caravan parks around here now are half empty due to plenty of housing available to rent to the mine & Gas  workers .

half empty or not won't make me use the caravan parks here. workers get up very, very, early

While in that location last year we spoke to a couple from Gladstone, they said due to the mines you could not even rent a garden shed in the area & locals were struggling to retain the premises that they had been renting for some time.

As for caravan parks they were out of the question, if they now have available sites then tuff luck to them.

It is a beaut spot to camp over for a few days, they have a fantastic market held in the Heritage complex next door to the camp spot once per month. The dates for the up coming markets are 25th Aug/ 29th Sep/ 27th Oct and 1st of Dec .

I hope it doesn't end up closing altogether for camping ,but it just seems a little strange that this has happened now that the single mens accommodation out on the Island is up and running for the LNG project. That takes about 1100 people away from needing accommodation in Gladstone now, Just before we left there to head away on this trip they were pulling out of the caravan parks to go stay over on the Island.

The park manager was whinging then regarding the free camping around the area, so I guess all it takes is a push from a caravan operator to council and bingo .
