Mounting Inverter

I have purchased a Powertech 380w inverter for my van. The only convenient place I can find to mount the inverter is under an overhead cupboard. Is it ok to mount the inverter upside down?

Cheers Pete

Shouldn't be a problem. The only moving part is the cooling fan and that runs in a bearing. I ran mine mounted on a wall and had no problems. As long as you can access the unit easily and air can circulate , it should be happy

I would be mounting it close to the battery pack, no voltage drop.

As all above, I mounted mine on a wall but also, as the units fuses were internal, I mounted an external fuse block with fuses adding up to just under the ratings on internal fuses. EG. mine 70 amps so externals where 65 amps. No pulling unit off wall to mend fuses, and they do go. Chase fault before changing though.

No, I'm not busy, I did it right the first time.

I mounted mine according to the manufacture recommendations, from memory only one way was not recommended. Read the manual for some tips.

Thanks for the replies. The position I would like to mount the inverter would require 2 mtrs of cable. I would use 6mm. Would this cause voltage drop? I will only be using it for recharging laptop, & camera batteries. (When the solar is supplying excess to battery charging)

My battery is under a bed. The inverter couldn't be accessed easily if mounted here. What do you do in this situation?

I have seen inverters mounted beside the battery in the boot & 240v leads running into the van. This seems impractical to me.

If you are talking 6mm auto wire I'd consider it a bit on the light side. I'd go for at least 6B&S if I were fitting it.

Hi Troopy, The wire is marked as 6mm. It measures 4mm dia of insulation, 3mm dia of wire. By my calculations that's approx 7sq mm for the wire. Wire sizing seems a confusing issue. It would be good to get a  chart that cross references the sizes.

 Hi  Pete

That is a Auto cable size = about 9B&S

Always be wary when the size is just in mm

It has no relaitonship to actual copper core size!

6B&S= 13.3mm2
