A Little Bit More ON The Snail Trail

Overnighted at the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park a few ks north of Tolga Qld on Kennedy H/Way.

A fantastic camp.A donation box is in place to help with the up keep of this very special camp, but alas most of the camper choose not to go near it.

This camp is situated on the 2/2 Australian general hospital laundry and medicial stores site during WW2. The Tablelands area became the largest military base in Oz with camps at Tinaroo/ Kairi/ Atherton/ Wongabel/ Herberton/ Wonecia/ Ravenshoe and Garnet.

Rocky Creek was the largest military hospital in the Southern Heisphere a 3000 bed hospital which treated over 60.000 patients from 1943/1945.

There is 40 memorial plaques   dedicated in memory to the young men who have lost their life in Afghanistin  ,one of the men who look after this beautiful spot was telling me that not long after they were erected some low life vandalised some of the plaques (as an x soldier hearing this I can tell you my blood was running pretty fast with revenge ) So it took extra money to try to have all this repaired.

If you ever get a chance I recommend you come and have a look at this remarkable bit of history to our fallen soldiers.

There is also a nice walk along Barney Springs Creek it is adjacent the park.

Thanks for the post Herbie. Sounds like a place I'm going to have to visit on my way back south again. Love those historic sites!  Entered in my book

Makes one believe in water boarding when you hear about the A/holes who just go out to destroy memorials in cemeteries and the like

As an old hippy I can't say I'm a great supporter of military intervention but these people gave their lives in service to our country and they deserve all the respect we can muster. I've placed it on our must visit list when we get the rig all set up.
