Towns like Mt Carbine/Mt Surprise/Mt Garnet/ Mt Isa,have names beginning with MT,has anyone else looked up a post code for these places
or tried entering an address on their GPS.MT is not recognised you need to enter Mount to achieve a result. In fact the MT is short for Mining Town
and not Mount as in mountains as there are no mountains in the areas surrounding these towns.I recon the shinny pants/Bureaucrats in the cities have inflickted upon us their incorrect interpretation of the town names -So we again suffer .
Mt Isa has made some effort to remedy this situation informally as it is now known as The Isa.
I always use the proper name Mount when entering in a place on my phones GPS. I never thought of doing the MT bit, I guess it's like asking the GPS in text speak.
Sorry I know what you meant in your post, the town is called Mt ??? But to find it on the Internet you use Mount. It is annoying when you have it spelt two different ways. It should be done as its written in the books, I agree.
I would imaging if you were looking for, for example Mount Surprise with it being a hill or mountain then Mt should find it. If Mount Surprise is a town then I would expect the full name would need to be used.
Similarly I wouldn't find Jacob's Well by inputting Jbs Well.
I haven't tested this theory but it is a guess.
Cheers Neil

John
The lone gold prospector John Campbell Miles stumbled upon one of the world's richest deposits of copper, silver and zinc upon during his 1923 expedition into the Northern Territory. While camping on the banks of the Leichardt River, Miles found the yellow-black rocks in a nearby outcrop reminded him of the ore found in the Broken Hill mine that he had once worked at. Upon inspection these rocks were weighty and heavily mineralised. A sample sent away to the assayer in Cloncurry confirmed that Miles had hit the jackpot. He and four farmers turned miners staked out the first claims in the area. Taken with friend stories of the Mount Ida gold mines in Western Australia, Miles decided upon Mount Isa as the name for his new claim.

Being called The Isa has nothing to do incorrect interpretation of town names by bureaucrats, it's just an Aussie thing that refers to large areas. Have you ever been to The Alice, or The Outback or The Bush?
MT is a universal abbreviation for Mount. Even after many years involvement with mining companies and outback towns I've never come across an interpretation of MT to mean mining town.
All my gps's don't care in the slightest if I enter 'mt' or 'mount' they find places just the same.

I was not referring to mining camps or mining towns of today being referred to as MT ..that is what they were known as back in the early days of mining. ,,
