ACCC investigates shopper dockets

The ACCC is investigating the use of shopper dockets by Coles and Woolworths and I believe this is well overdue as they have both been ripping off the public for years and getting away with it.

winkJust think are Woolworths or Coles going to sustain a loss on selling cheap fuel of course not, you are paying much more at the check out than you need to to cover the fuel discount and you don't question the steady weekly increase in food costs or consider the number of AUSTRALIAN business that Coles and Woolworths are sending to the scrap heap each week.furiousfurious

What about their ethical business principals, what ethical principals I hear you say,  I don't believe they think of anything other than ripping money out of your pocket they have both recently been found guilty and fined for false advertising.

Woolworths controls two of the most socially damaging areas in this country they now control along with Coles most of the alcohol sales in Australia and they are selling booze at prices which encourage excessive drinking and we know the result of that, followed by the number of poker machines that they have in the massive number of hotels they own and who suffers most as a result of this, could it be families who buy their groceries from these two low life companies.furiousfuriousfurious

confuseHow can any business give a 45 cent discount per litre pn petrol without ripping it out of your purse or wallet some other way.confuse

smileThere are at this time other options for purchasing both fuel and your daily food requirements but unless we Australians get behind these businesses especially the independent fuel suppliers they will be squashed by Coles and woolworths and then what do you think will happen to fuel prices, I believe the business ethics and principals of both of these companies leaves an awful lot to be desired and I for one say go ACCCsmilesmilesmile

I agree in what you have posted, but believe the ACCC should also be investigated by an independent audit, for taking this long to investigate these two s/market chains.

This has been going on for years, it is not as though it has not been obvious.

Mr & Mrs average has known this for years.

The question now is who is going to pay for these companies ripping the motorist off for so long.

In the end it will be us paying for the fines they incur.

They will just put the price of other goods and services up to cover it all.

It has always been a scam, but it sounds like a good deal on the surface of it.

Shop with us, spend money (never mind it might be cheaper elsewhere) and get a discount on petrol..... sure.

I don't usually bother but had a docket when I got fuel yesterday.....................the bowser said $102.50, and after my discount, it cost $100.

I would have saved over $2.50 shopping elsewhere, and the price of diesal at the competing service station was 2 cents/litre less anyway.

So, for the grand old benefit of $2.50, I supported Coles and their monopoly in this area, and Shell (whose monopoly I don't like either ). .............Sold my soul to the devil, as Grandma used to say!

That's the last they get out of me!

It suprises me how many people support this sham I live south of Sydney and travel there twice a week and have been buying my fuel from the independents for about 3 years and surprise surprise I have always bought it cheaper than the big 2's discounted price at my pumps I suspect the ACCC will as in the past be toothless tigers again why the hell do we spend large amounts of money on them to achieve zero result I think we have all seen it before what a waste of your tax dollar shame on our pollies for wasting our money yet again if we had some half decent pollies maybe this would not happen but we are all to blame for the boofheads we elect maybe one day we may just wake up to them

I hold a VIP card from the Queensland Fuel Group, an independent company and I get 2 cents a litre discount at any of their outlets. I refuse to but at any Coles/Woolworths outlets even though we shop at Coles to get items IGA doesn't have. Know I pay for the fuel docket via item prices but what can you do in a small town. Just my protest.

I certainly won't be holding my breath waiting for ACCC to take any action whatsoever, it's not going to happen.

We try to shop away from the majors but do have to buy some items from them. For fuel, always where possible, buy BP.

I have to admit I take advantage of the shopper docket discounts, and have changed our shopping habits accordingly.

Yes I recognise the damage the dominance of the duopoly has done to the Australian retail landscape.

Yes I would prefer to support independent fuel suppliers.

The problem comes when you look at what is available to us. 95% of the fuel supply around us in the Melbourne suburbs are owned by the duopoly. The independents charge the same retail price as the pre discount price at the Coles or Woolworths owned outlets. I am also not eligible for any of their loyalty programs.

We shop at Woolworths anyway, so all we did was reduce the frequency of our shopping, result a significant saving when we visit the fuel pump.

As the owner of a self managed supper fund I also hold shares in both the large retailers, thus in theory I m also part of the problem.

I am afraid it is too late to reverse the duopoly.

I wonder how long it will be till they recognise opportunities in the mobile home and caravan park industries, if they have not already.

On the news today was an item that Coles were selling an increasing amount of "branded" milk . I wonder if this means more people want to support the dairy farmers ?
For Coles to sell their milk so cheaply,(and give fuel discounts) something else has to be dearer, and I have found with the soy-milk I buy that it is 30cents /litre cheaper at IGA.

Interestingly I have just checked the amount of fuel have used this year so far and had I purchased it from Woolworths and Coles I would have saved just $45.68, I understand that to some of us that is an amount well worth saving I am not interested in the four cent saving as it is an absolute con.

Recently I did shop in Woolworths as they offered a fuel discount of Forty Six Cents per litre off we took the wife's car my car with both Gas and Petrol and combined we saved$56.25 on a fill for both vehicles It will take a very long time for Woolworths to recoup that $56.25 from me, most BP servos offer a discount on LPG and there are other independent servos around that offer discounts and if not the saving on a tank of LPG for me only saves only $2.60.

Have checked IGA versus Coles on 20 items we regularly purchase our saving was $6.89, I am going to check Aldi for same products in near future but I suspect I will also discover the 4 cent discount for those items is very expensive and effectively cost me $6.89 for a Coles docket.

It's a shame when we can't trust the watch dog to look after us.
I gave up claiming dockets a couple of years ago.
Recently I worked from Adelaide to WA border, then to Mackay. Somewhere in there some gherkin bumped up the fuel prices by about 10 cents.
What a croc shock!
In WA the prices are the same as Qld and SA, as I noticed when we slipped through last week.
Where's the watch dog???
