Still On The Snail Trail.

Up date on this very slow trip,We made it to Ayer so we all could take the dive trip we booked before we left hone.

So had to fill in time until the dive today.

We stayed a couple of days at the Caravan Park in Alva Beach about 16k east of Ayr due to the fact it was not that far to where we

had to take our dive from. The park is a nice park to stay in,but at this time of year like most parks up this way that is only five mins walk from the water it is never with out customers lining up at the gate to pull in. The site a big compared to most sites in van parks and what I like about the way the sites are set out with sort of a hibiscus hedge between each site for some privacy. The grounds a neat and tidy with palm trees (coconut ) for shade swimming pool and camp kitchen and you can pick oranges and mandarins off the trees for free.

Did not get to do any fishing here,as yesterday we went for a drive into Arlie Beach to have a look at the new marina, and all the boats bobbing about in the water. I could not wait to get out of the place, Just so busy with back packers all over the place.

I recon we were the oldest people in the street ,most people were between 20/30 years of age.

We went to use the public toilets and they had taken over inside using the power points to re charge phns and lap tops and what ever else they had with them, they had double adaptors plugged into the power points inside and gear all over the place on the bench and on the floor.

And out side their Wicked vans and Space ship campers had washing strung up on make shift lines between two vehicles.

It really looked like a third world shanty town.

The dive went extra well one of the things my wife and I have had on our bucket list for years, so now we can strike it off out list.

This dive is clased as one of the top 10 dive places in the world,so it was pretty special to be able to do it.

This wreck is about a 30 min boat ride from Ayr's Alva Beach. The trip out to it they tell me can be very rough but today it was kind of not too bad. In 1911 the SS Yongala ran into a server cyclone off Burdiekin Coast and just disappeared almost with out trace. The fate of

the ship and 122 passengers remained a mystery until 1958 when it was discovered 12 nautical miles off Cape Bowling Green

The 109m long wreck lies in 28mts of water and attracts all kinds of sea life ..giant Gropers, Turtles Manta Rays, Sea Snakes Hawks Bill Turtles Humped head Wrasses and Anemon Fish and the resident Marble Ray, the engine  can be clearly seen from out side,so it was well worth the 20 odd years to go dive it.

Tomorrow is another day and we will head up the track I guess a little further.

Herbie, if you go to Townsville, the Museum of Tropical Queensland has wonderful exhibits related to the Yongala. Next door is the Aquarium. Makes a nice day out. Cheers JulieM

We are in Townsville Herbie - till Monday at least. At the Town and Country CP - at the showgrounds Kings Road, between Wool**** and Ingham roads. Not flash, but one of the cheapest around, and handy to everything - Castletown shopping centre just across the road. Heading to Toomulla to meet up with Yeoeleven and Solo Steve on Monday afternoon, if all goes well with the motorhome service. A really good meal is to be had at the Bohle Tavern - heading north out of town.
