I treat it as another point of contact which is available that enables you to place a message directly to an individual ..

It provides no privacy .. but may keep it away from the open forum viewers .. tried it once .. never used it since !

It will show your message to any registered member.  A pm (private message) on the other hand can only be seen by the member you send it to.

You can amend your profile on User Details to remove the whiteboard....

I've used it but I find it much more fiddly to access than the messages bit. So I just send messages now which have the added advantage that they can only be seen by the recipient.
