I thought I read in this forum, that somewhere in Alice Springs  (McDonald Ranges)  where you could camp and do voluntary work to cover some of your cost ( the same as the transport museum.) Can someone direct me to the correct site please?

It is the transport museum. You are required to volunteer for 10 hrs per week and pay $20 to cover power. It is not a given you can get in but this time of year can get crowded with the annual reunion in August.

You can also be a voluntary camp host at Ormiston Gorge and a couple of other spots, you contact the NT National Parks mob for info.
