We had one out at Stuart, Townsville , back when I was in the Army. I had a V8 Falcon"shaggin wagon"With murals onethe side. Open the back, and"watch the movie"with the girlfriend, who I ended up marrying, a mistake. Closed now. Also , we still have open air movies at the sports and req club at Horsehoe bay on Magnetic island, at times. Great for the kids. Bill
I had a boyfriendwho drove an ex-hearse. But I wasn't silly enough to marry that one

Yep ?? best memory I have is we went to the Maribynong drive in Vic to see the Beatles Help !! My best mate was probably one of the first guys to were an earing in his ear ?? it was a little Bell, As he was walking to the tuck shop, a guy leaned out of his car and said ?? Hello ''Tinkerbell'' gimme a kiss ?? My mate went to say something ? BUT it turned out there were four carloads, of them ?? Hmm not good ?? So the mate came back to our group and said I need ''back-up'' We were in a group of nine carloads.
So we filtered down to the offending vehicle, And confronted the ''Big mouth'' His friends got out of their cars, it was then explained to them, [ firmly] this situation can be settled Either All In ?? or One on One ?? Then my mate confronted Mr Big mouth, and said would you like to say sorry mate !! or give me that Kiss you promised ?? Mr Big mouth through a punch that was blocked, and then promptly recieved a good right hook on the chin and went down, after about 2 minutes he got up, still groggy, and said sorry mate I was a bit out of line, ??
So the mate said No worries, enjoy the movie and you can also keep that kiss, !! and off we went back to our cars, Ahhh !! they were the good old days, where you could settle a dispute the good old Aussie way, and not worry about all in brawls, with guns knives and bottles like todays cowards fight ?
Hello Doglady, Gee I am glad you cleared up what you meant there ?? ------ As there are thousands of Nice respectable Men out there that were doing the right thing in talking a Nice girl out to see a nice Movie, Only to find that those nice girls, once in a ''Drive In'' type envoiroment, turned into sexual predators, and took Advantage of those poor well meaning Boys,

Just after I finished typing my previous bit about remembering Chullora drive in, my other half said "remember it was a twin drive in"
Well, no I don't remember it being a "twin" drive in....what was so special about a "twin" drive in, what did I miss out on, why don't I remember that it was a twin drive in?

I vaguely remember that term also, wasn't that where you parked your vehicle faced one way to view a certain movie or in the opposite direction if you were watching another? Who can remember ????
I remember going out with a guy who owned an old '54 Vanguard. It was great at the drive-in when it started to rain because it had electric wipers whereas the old Holdens of the day had to have the engine running before the wipers would work.
However times were tough in those days and we couldn't always afford to go in, so on a frosty night we'd sit out on the main road facing the big screen which was on a sight angle, but we could see well enough. On said frosty night, if we wound down the passenger side window, you could clearly hear the sound due to all those speakers going at once in the cars that were inside.
Then those things were introduced whereby the car radio tuned to a certain frequency was able to pick up the sound. The idea was to avoid the cost of replacing those speakers torn off their post when people forgot to hang them up. Unfortunately for the operators of the Southern Drive-in (Sebastopol, Victoria) this idea caused an influx of cheap-skates (like us if we could find a park) who simply sat outside the drive-in and used their radios to listen in, so they grew poplars right along the inside of the fence line. Just as they were getting to a height where they were actually beginning to cut off the view from the screen, the entire drive-in scene became unprofitable and the Southern Drive-in closed down. It too is a housing estate now

Your mind must have been occupied at the time Capricorn and didn't notice a screen at the back of you. That's what happens when you get engrossed in a movie.

Used to go to Elizabeth & Gepps X (still there) I had 2 Customlines both with lay back seats, remember them. They were big enough inside with the seats down to have a party in, left the panel vans for dead and I had a couple of them later. Wonder where all those people from those times are now ?
In one city we lived between farms there was a family who used to screen assorted films, mainly travel, in their front yard with the screen facing the street. They and neighbours sat in deck chairs to watch. It was a regular event.
Soon they also had a number of cars parked outside (no gutters) with families getting free entertainment. No-one minded back then.
The funny bit was when they woke to passing the hat around outside for coin donations, a time in the evening when some cars found it necessary to leave.
