Caravan accident

hi Campers,  Travelled from Woomera to Coober Pedy few days ago and counted around 13 'dead' cars on that stretch of road - remarked to DH 'what on earth is wrong with this road?'  then, few km further, came across a bad caravan accident, front bonnet of vehicle bashed in and back of caravan caved in.  3 police cars in attendance...  We had previously noted an ambulance going the other way.  Looked like caravan driver had been turning into a rest stop and he was rear-ended....  Anybody heard anything about that?...  Jay-Jay

If they are just lying there it's usually because they've broken down or run out of juice. If they have Police tape around them they've been involved in something illegal, or been dumped after being stolen and involved in something illegal.
Some may have dings, usually 'roo inflicted, or emu, or wombat, depending on where they are.
The crashes happen because people don't pay attention or don't use indicators, or don't use headlights in poor visibility.
There have been extensive fogs across the country recently. Our work was affected on the Kidman Way last week.
Just drive safely according to the conditions, and allow for the other bast....d's stupidity.

Speaking of crashes. If anyone is heading north up the Bruce, please take great care. There is extensive road work, and just south of Mackay is the Baker Creek roadworks. A couple of prangs this morning, and another further south at Rosella - truck vs car. Not sure of the circumstances, but Transport went to investigate.
Then there's the oversize. Just please, please, please be patient. Plan ahead, take your time, and keep your head on straight.
The inland roads are also subject to roadworks, so you may not escape all of it. Leave a bit earlier and give yourselves plenty of time. Keep that radio tuned to Ch 40, and watch your mirrors so you can prepare for anything happening behind you.
Stay safe folks!!!!!

I agree in every word you say re the road works going on all over QLD but mainly on the Bruce H/Way in particular,as the Bruce is bad enough at any time and with all this action( re road works ) it only adds to the confusion of things...I have just come back from up the Cape and that road is pretty challenging in places but compared to the Bruce give the GDR any day.

After we travelled the above section of the Sturt Highway last year, we saw the same - all the dead cars.  on arriving at Coober Pedy, we asked at the Informatin centre.  the cars are placed there as a "deterrent" and a "reminder" that accidents do happen  - you know, that sobering thought..  Obviously it does not work.

Granny, as a queenslander, love your reference to 'the bruce'

We thought people must have run into cows, as there seemed to be plenty of dead cattle along the road too.

Cannot agree in that there is nothing wrong with the Bruce H/Way ,What is right with it is more to the point.

Yes people maybe at fault in some of the accidents on the length of it,but if there is nothing wrong with it why is there so much road works going on along it and try telling around 55 families in the past 12 months who have lost loved ones there is nothing wrong with it.

I cannot believe anyone who drives on it on a regular basis  ( classified most dangerous road in Oz ) not one classification but five !!!

that would agree with you on this .

Bruce highway may not be in good condition but if people drove to the conditions instead of blaming the road there would be much less carnage.

The Perth - Bunbury highway in WA was always called "a dangerous road".  That is rubbish.  The people who drove on it were dangerous.  Impatience, inattention and speed is what killed people on it.  It is now a dual carriageway all the way & people still die on it.

We haven't driven all of the Bruce as yet but those parts we have (mainly Maryborough to Rocky, Daintree to Cairns) I'd class as no worse, frequently better than many I've driven over the past forty odd years. What I have noticed though in our travels in Queensland over the past five months or so is that the state appears to have an extremely high idiot factor amongst it's drivers. We've had more near misses (almost always due to Qld registered vehicles) in that time than I've had in my entire time driving in NSW. Perhaps some effort should go into education about little things like double lines, passing on crests, etc but above all teaching drivers that their ambitions don't necessarily match their vehicles ability.

We find, in the course of our oversize movements, they have xray vision and esp, able to predict what is over the hill or around the bend.
All we can do is brace for the possibility of a crash.
They do seem to be a bit short of road manners here in Mackay. Perhaps apathy is the problem, or is it impatience and arrogance?
I almost slammed up the rear of a car a couple of days ago. I was stuck behind a small vehicle travelliing at 80 KPH. Not bad in itself, but they just stayed there, and then hit the brakes, changed into a left slip lane, and then started the turn with the indicators.
Luckily I was the only vehicle affected by this stupid action, because it could have meant Betty being belted from behind, and that would never do.
The "blinkers" are called INDICATORS for a reason - to INDICATE the driver's intention to change lanes or turn. Not to indicate they have just changed lanes or turned.
Incorrect use of indicators is pet peeve of mine.

It's the complete absence of use of the indicators that really bugs me

To give Qld just a little credit, the Bruce does suffer more weather related trauma than many highways in other states.  Certainly last January's floods took a heavy toll. I grew up in SA, and the roads there have never been subject to cyclonic weather damage so I guess that could be part of why they seem better. But it's really up to drivers to adjust their driving to suit conditions.
