Road Cooktown to Weipa?

Hi there, I'm looking at traveling between Cooktown & Weipa August/September. Would anyone know what the road is like from Cooktown to Weipa. I drive 4wd ute and tow 17f pop top van. Cheers SueB.

I drove that road last week (not towing) and at the moment it is in reasonably good condition.  Of course lots of dirt and corrugations. Whether you find it acceptable will depend on the type of caravan you are towing; if you don't mind rough roads and lots of dust.  Although the road was good last week it may change over the period of a few weeks.

Cheers,

Greg

Just travelled up and back and the road was different both ways.Going up there wasn't as much traffic so the bulldust and corrugations were not as bad as the return trip. How ever in saying that there is no way I would even think of towing a caravan if it was not off road. And I mean real off road as it would only wreck the van.

A lot of people have tried it and found out the hard way.

As for giving anyone up to date road conditions, one cannot give accurate conditions as it can change in a matter of a few days.

Trying to describe how good or how bad a dirt road can be can be very misleading.

A section of dirt can be as smooth as a good bitumen road one day and then a few days latter, with some rain or a lot of road trains that same section of road can become a nightmare.

The other thing about travelling this road is  the unexpected, bulldust, corrugations, river crossings, salt water crocs, long distance between supplies, and emergancey help and always unpredictable road conditions.

And if you decide to travelon this road make sure your insurance covers you and you have a cover that covers at least one replacement wind screen per year.As most people get chips or broken windscreens.

Hope this may be of some help.
