We are about to embark on a 2 year around OZ trip with our van. Just had the property managers out as we wish to rent out our place while we are away. Hit a snag with our house and contents insurance as we will be storing our gear in our 4 bay shed. Insurers will not provide us with storage cover when the owner is not occupying the property full time. Land lord insurance will only cover damage to house by tenants but not our own personal effects in storage in the shed!!
I know we will not be the first to face this dilema. Would appreciate some advice from others as to how they proceeded with this problem.
Kind regards,
Jill and Craig

Not sure if Ken Tame & Associates on (03) 9853 5555 or email them at info@kentame.com.au will be able to help as he does a lot of CMCA insurance I believe. Never used them but have heard he is competitive.

Unfortunately what has happened to you is a common problem and the majority of insurers will not offer the full cover that applies to an owner occupier when they do not live on the premises. Some people end up getting what is a restricted cover for fire, theft etc. As a last resort, and if you can not get the insurance you want, ask your insurer if they would cover it under a general property policy. By all means try Ken Tame As they have a relationship with the caravanning public.
Alternatively you may need to look at professional storage facilities where they may be able to offer what is called goods in storage insurance However, they may only do this if they do the removal of your furniture into the storage facility also.
Sadly, you are in a no mans land where insurers do not want to be involved because they consider it a high risk.
Best of luck.

Commisure ensured our garden shed ( attached to our garage, not demountable) chockers with whatever we could get in there. They also covered our house contents- floor coverings, curtains stove, dishwasher etc- general Landlords insurance.
Our home was rented from 24.2.13 for 23 mths. Most of furniture is in a local storage shed also insured by Commisure.

A big thanks to all who replied to my posting. The good news is hubby has just returned from a appointment with insurer at the bank. We now have a Landlords policy PLUS they are going to insure the contents of the shed. Two lessons learned from all this: 1.) sometimes it is better to talk face to face with an insurer rather than relying on what some-one on the end of the phone tells you. AND 2.) Keep a good eye on your policy as our contents insurance coverage has been going up each year without our knowledge. Eg. we requested a $60,000 cover of contents when we took the policy out. The premium automatically gets deducted each year from our account. Today we found out our cover is for $110,000! So now the bank owes US money...that would be a first LOL!
Once again a big thank you to everyone's replies. Safe travels.
