From what I hear around the traps is that the ones on hydraulics with slide rails are prone to jaming if the van is not level, also if any debery as in dirt/sticks gets on the rails you have a problem.
The pendulem type dont have this problem. This is only hear say , not from experience.

I have spoken at length with two owners of the Cross Roads cruiser and Dryden fifth wheelers. No issues with Dryden (4 owners) but of the Cross Road one had an earlier model and had it around four years and had trouble with it on uneven sites but the company in Gympie did a "fix" on it and he has had no trouble since. The other was only just over twelve months old but they had been on the road six months and no issue. We intend upgrading soon and whether we have a 5er or van it will have a slide out. Before we pick it up part of the initial discussions will be show me the slide on an uneven surface. They get the money when I am happy.

We have a 30' Truelux 5'er with slide out, in 14 months full time on the road it has worked flawlessly, I too was nervous of the big hole in the side of the unit, but so far I have been proven wrong.
Ours is a push pull cable system and the cables have needed adjusting once, but it did not fail, I just noticed one of the cables had become a little slack. It still worked fine.
We have a roll awning over the top which keeps much of the dirt from settling up there, which we have been told can cause premature seal failure
There are 3 seals in ours one on the slide itself, and two on the actual hole bit in the van, one outside and one inside. I keep the sides and bottom of the slide clean and waxed but generally it is maintenance free.
We have been in some horrendous storms, including hail ! and never had a leak from the slide.
