RE: Optus

I'd like to meet the Phantom, Bill. I wanna ask him where he buys his clothes. I reckon I'd look pretty spiffy in one of those body suits with the undies on the outside. And Jules, I don't have a smart phone yet, but I intend to get one. What I need to know from my ISP is if I can use another carrier to access my web site via FTP (file transfer protocol) to update it. I also need to access the site stats which are hosted by my ISP. So there are a few things I need to sort out before I choose between Optus and Telstra. I do know one thing, though, moving my site to another hoster would be a MAJOR pain.

We're presently at the caravan park in Marlborough - 100ks north of Rocky. No TV teception, passable bore water, yet I'm sending this on my $2 Amaysim sim card loaded with $10 of credit. It uses Optus as a carrier.
My wife'sTelsta 3G has 1 bar and she cannot get on the web as it's too weak a signal.
This is one case where you don't always get what you pay for.

As I said to you, talk to Yeoeleven - he has a blog, and is very cluey on all of this, he could explain to you what he does. And did you know you can get really good prices on smart phones at your local Post Office - I paid $59 for an LG - think Bill12 has an LG as well - really easy to use and understand. I use it as a hot spot for the internet, and works really well - on Telstra of course.

You got it cheap, Jules. I paid $79 from the post office shop, and It works well. I have had abit of trouble getting it to work on win8, but it worked great on win 7.Tethering was relatively easy, and cheap with the kogan chip. LG-E400F Optimus is the model. I hope this helps. Bill

Bill, they were advertising them for $39 the other day - my grandson is getting the same one this week.  Once I found out how to tether, it was easy to set up and use.

Well, after reading all the comments, I reckon this is the way I'll go. Get a smart phone with a USB port to tether it to the laptop, an external aerial socket to fit a Yaggi antenna, plus GPS built-in. That way, I'll have a smart phone, a modem, extra signal strength in remote-ish areas, and GPS. How does that sound? If I find at some stage that Optus is not up to scratch, I can always get a Telstra sim card.

Hi Gary, the way you mention in your post above,is the best way to go.We live in a digital world now,so we expect to be able to have the use of it at our finger tips. And being on the road full/half time even, all our personal info is on putter ,so if insurance or what ever is due one wants to be able to sort it out ...like now not in two/ three weeks when you may have service back closer to a major town/ city.

Good luck with it all but I would not leave home with out the Yaggi antenna, have the sat dish also but very have not used it since buying the Yaggi.

Some phones are dual SIM so you could use 2 different carriers?. Phone will need to be unlocked too.

Thanks for your detailed suggestion Stewart. I've just sent a note off to my ISP to discuss the use of a wifi modem and aerial to improve the performance of Optus. Years ago, I had an altercation with a pompous officious young Telstra employee and swore I would never have anything to do with Telstra again. But I'm open to changing my attitude about that depending on what's best for me. Meanwhile I'll check out the Optus potential before I make any decision. I'm in no hurry.

It's also worth mentioning that my ISP has a very good 7-day technical help service which I've used often over the years.

Get yourself a Huawei E589 Modem/WiFi Router, they are a good little unit, and have the ability to accept an external antenna.
