Car Insurance

Have moved into the van so was updating details on the car insurance today.

Apparently as I will have no fixed address the underwriters will not insure me and my policy will expire next week!!furiousfurious

As it happens we have a fixed address until mid August and then we hit the road. I explained that this is a friends house and we will come back there on occassion but apparently that is not good enough and as the car has no fixed address they will not insure it!!!

GRRRRRRrrrr!!

I did ask them how the 100,000 odd nomads on the road now get insurance but he was pissy with me by then and didnt reply!!

Has anyone else had this problem? So who do you use for vehicle insurance? Any suggestions greatly received as we have til next week to find another insurance company. Oh..and this is with Budget Direct!!!

Car Insurance - declined due to no residential/garaging address

That's strange - worked in insurance for many years and never come across that for private motor insurance.

I believe the caravanning association (can't recall what it is called) have a broker with access to an underwriting agency that specialises in vehicle/van insurance for caravan travelers both part and full time with and without a registered home base, so I think there is a work around for this - have you contacted a few different insurers or just one? I am sure there is someone on the forum who can provide the details of the Caravan Assoc insurance broker/policy for you - I believe you have to pay membership to the assoc to access the insurance however.

If the association broker can not help, I believe APIA may provide the insurance you are looking for, but make sure you read the Product Disclosure Statement as there could be limitations/conditions.  Try googling - "car insurance for full time travellers with no fixed address"  - they may just apply a loading to the premium due to the traveling risks

Good luck -

RE: Car Insurance

It's worthwhile spending $40.00 a year and join CMCA. Even for no other reason, their insurance rates are the best I can find. I just had a major claim and it's a pleasure to deal with their Insurers.

My NSW licence is unable to have no fixed address as they (RTA) must have an address where notices can be served, ie fines renewals etc so yr registration is likely to be similar, maybe just use that address but like above the T&Cs need to be studied. Best get rid of budget direct anyway as they are focused on specific markets only.

Hello again - I do agree about Budget Direct and the majority of direct to the public insurers, get rid of it, - you pay for what you get. Always,  not only read the PDS, but look at who the actual insurer is behind the policy ... ie. CIL who are caravan/motorhome specialists is Vero/Suncorp Group, so a very reputable insurer who offer a specific product to a niche market.

Speak with a Broker and get some advice and quotes ..... in the end, you don't have to go with what they offer, but they will at least provide you with some information/advice and you will be better prepared at the end of the exercise.

The insurance broking industry is very heavily legislated and monitored these days, so the person you speak to is trained and qualified to give you the advice and you will not speaking to some 18 years old school leaver at a call centre in  Sydney, Melbourne, India or the Phillipines who's role is to just write the business regardless.

I think you probably have some good advice from the other responders to your post........ best of luck>

Do what the rest of us have to do when no fixed address, just borrow/ rent a family or friends address.

Can understand why there needs to be a address regarding driving license ( in case they need to send you a traffic infringement notice)

I am with CUE vehicle and CIL caravan.....No need to send $40 to CMCA to get insurance over through these two insurance's.

Once you have your insurance through these two insurance companies ,you can request every thing forwarded to you via the inter net. Also can pay over the Net.
