I use a plain old eye Mac desktop, ant PC will do and download the MP3 version which I copy to a USB stick and plug into my car audio and listen while driving.
The MP3 can be copied to an eye pod too as an option.
I just don't get the eyepod the whole tablet thing is a passing fad like the yoyo I reckon. I mean a device that has no keyboard and no way of interfacing to the outside world apart from proprietary iCloud and iTunes what a restriction.

I suggest that you buy a cheap Android tablet and you will realize just how useful a tablet can become, I don't see them as a passing fad and in most cases will replace desk tops and laptops, they do have a onscreen keyboard and can also can connect to a keyboard via bluetooth, you can use a tablet to do anything you do on your present computer and much more be it email or browsing reading books or watching video's, listening to audio, skyping the list is endless.
I have just bought an Android 10.1 tablet for $122 from China and I can see it will be much more versatile than a laptop when caravanning.
I use a Kindle for Ebooks & have downloaded a hundred or so of their free ones. They have about 400 pages of titles. The bigest issue is wading through them all.
Was given a $50 Amazon voucher on my birthday, so have purchased one or two books not on the free list & they're great too. An instant & extremely efficient way of delivering & paying via Amazon to the Kindle.
I am currently wrestling with the question of getting one of those I pads or a tablet of some sort.
The I pads seem the most popular but I think are possibly overpriced. But which one would I buy? An entry level or all the way up to the top of the range with WiFi & 3G plus a rather large memory?
On the other hand there are all the competing tablets with a vast range of options.
Maybe I should start looking at some of the on line review & comparison web sites.
Cloak - you sound a bit like me - thought I would get a smartphone - had it for a while, and couldn't work out why I wasn't getting sound notification of messages or calls. Asked 19 yr old grandson to have a look for me - he pressed one button, and it worked!!!!!!! Magic, I thought, "what did you do" - his answer - "turned the volume up"!! Not sure I am smart enough for a smartphone, but am persevering, and can now use the data to connect the laptop to the internet!!!!!!

You may find that your local library now has an Ebook section and you can download some of the latest books online. I borrow books from the Gosford library and their selection continues to grow. It seems that it is possible to borrow Ebooks from libraries that are not local to you you just need to be a member, not all council libraries have Ebook sections as yet. Two other council areas that are close to home only have the latest magazines that you can borrow at this point in time. If you are considering buying an E reader look at others, other than Kindle as you are too a degree locked into Amazon format where as other readers support most formats. The reader I am using at the moment is the Kobo touch at around $100 to buy. One of the advantage of E books is your ability to borrow library books when you are travelling well away from home. Cheers David
Kindle does have an issue with displaying eBooks formatted in a file type of ".eEPUB"
however, there are MANY free software applications available to suitably convert these files..... eg http://calibre-ebook.com/
so IMHO this should not be an overriding concern regarding which ereader to purchase....(unless, of course, you dont also have access to a laptop for 'converting').

Jules, I'm with you about the smartphone - there needs to be a process to bottle the grandkids so we can take them with us to help with life's little emergencies :)
