Years ago we were so tired of our smoke alarm yelling every time we had toast we took it off wall & put it in the back of a cupboard & completely forgot about it. Time goes by & we had a funny noise in caravan & we decided we must have a gecko taken up residence with us. Couldn't find it but we did eventually find the smoke alarm making a noise - low battery signal. Now one of our alarms is so touchy - if we use insect spray it starts yelling & actually says - Danger, in the kitchen, danger in the kitchen. So we sometimes get nagged by our alarm.
I fell into the same trap by buying a cheap smoke alarm. Start to cook, off goes the alarm, take it off the wall and put it out of range. Then I found at Bunnings, a specially made and more expensive Smoke alarm for kitchens. So I made an investment, problem solved.....

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
Years ago, Avan camper trailers had gas alarms on them as well as the fire alarm, the gas alarm was so touchy it went off if someone passed wind, and not to mention hair or fly spray being used in the van. Most people turned them off, Avan stopped using them further down the track.
Hmmm. I just ordered two cheapies on eBay - a smoke alarm and a CO alarm. Looks like I'll be in for a few rude shocks. Not much room in the camper to mount them away from the "action".
I also bought my smoke alarm from Bunnings (I think it is called a photo-electric smoke alarm). The cost is about $40 but well worth it. It has never gone off when making toast. I guess covering up the cheapies is Ok as long as you remember to uncover them when you've finished cooking brekky.
