Morning all, we are heading up to QLD via the Kidman Way, we are at the moment in Cobar, good road up from the border, was wondering what is ahead for us?????
Road ahead is not too bad, watch out for emus and goats, they are plentiful and emus are erratic. Lots of road trains too.
If you are continuing up further the road from Charleville to Longreach can be a bit bouncy but drive to the conditions and you will be fine. How far up are you going and are you doing the Matilda Hwy?.
We did the reverse, up the east coast, savannah hwy, Matilda and then Kidman to Griffith. They are typical country roads , though if you go up past Cloncurry you will hit developmental Rds. One lane of bitumen and dirt either side, pull over for road trains for safety and once again drive to conditions.
Cobar is a lovely town. We stayed at Kidmans Camp in Nth Bourke it's a very nice park .
Just watched a show in Aurora channel 183 Foxtel and the presenter of the show headed up on the Kidman Way visiting a number of towns including Jerilderie .. Griffith and Hay. There were many places of interest and free camps along the way. So much so that we have this area on our must do list. Jay&Dee
Once you cross the boarder into QLD you will notice that the roads, are hit and miss regarding their condition. Some are under road repair ,some are very badly in need of road repair and other parts are ok,but drive to the road/ weather conditions is the only way to travel .And remember some of the road trains are huge. And a word of warning never sit behind a road train carrying live stock ,other wise you will get covered with runny s..t and it ain't easy trying to wash it off.
At the moment we are in Isisford Qld, great place, we came up the Kidman way and had no problems trailing the 23'6'' Stirling, as others have said just be aware, take your time and most road trains will call you up, and then just pull over or get off and let them go. The road between Tambo and Blackall has about 12Klm's of resurfacing going on but we had no problem two days ago. If you come to Isisford from Blackall just be aware of the Grids and pot holes near the grids they can be a bit bad so take care. Ok hope that helps, enjoy.
