The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I love it. I am always telling my children, they get choices in their lives, it is up to them to chose their paths and make the most of it. If we make a wrong choice, there is usually another path to take that may improve our lot. But the choice is always ours.

Hi I don't comment much on here but this poem is significant to me. I studied this for year 12 English many moons ago and it did not mean much then. I was more interested in the book A Fortunate Life as a topic however it is funny how life turns. This poem now has so much more meaning as one looks back on life and where we have been and where we are going. I used this as the opening page to my slide shows of travels over the last few years.
