Following on from the Cobb versus the Dreampot thread, I was wondering if many travellers make use of a pressure cooker while on the road. While we don't always take ours, which is a medium sized one, on the occasions that we have, I've found it great for getting either a stew, soup or a piece of corned beef (or whatever you fancy) onto the table with minimum waiting time. Also, because it cooks the meal relatively quickly, you're saving on the amount of gas used. A penny for your thoughts.................. Cheers, Annie
I remember as a teenager going an a camping holiday with my family and our grandparents. To cut a long story short my Dad used to make a mix of Corned beef( Camp Pie In Oz) with onions potatoes and tinned tomatoes, garden peas all cooked up in a pressure cooker.
It was quick and tasty but not for every meal. We had a small mutiny and got Gran to stop the same meal every day.
Apart from that it's a great way too cook when travelling for all the reasons put forward. Less fuel, quick cooking and less washing up.
We have a Breville Pressure Cooker,Slow Cooker,Steamer. It is used every day at home, and when going away, it goes in the van Womans Weekly have put out an excellent cook book, and the meals are great
Rice takes 4 minutes and is perfect. Brown Rice 12 minutes.
Butter Chicken, 8 minute Rissotto, Beef Tangine, Apricot Chicken, Rice Pudding to name a few.
The great thing is it is a one pot thing. It's a no brainer to use, and if you miss the finish of the cook time, it automatically goes on to warm, and keeps meal warm
But seriously, any normal recipe can be used, just reduce cooking time by 1/3,

Is this an electric appliance or can you use it on a gas cooktop please? I'm interested that it automatically goes onto "warm" after cook-time is finished.
Have never taken the pressure cooker with us, seemed like a lot of extra weight for not much use.
I can only remember pressure cookers and spinach on the kitchen ceiling when the safety valve blew! Our son and daughter both have electric ones and love them but it would just take too much space in our small van. I like doing it the old fashioned way when we're away. What's the rush? We've got all the time in the world. And if I really want a holiday I put it in the thermal pot and it's all cooked when I get back to the van.
