A quick question this time... Promise.

How "bad" is it to be in the Van whilst travelling? Whether if be to cook, eat or sleep? Be honest, how many of you have done it? If so or not, why

My wife used to work at Queensland Transport. It is illegal to have a person in the van whilst its moving

I've often wondered the same. Depends what type of van it was but cooking would be a No No
I wouldn't want to be in a caravan while travelling but I wonder about motorhomes. It could be ok?

When you see what happens to a van in an accident, why would you take such an extreme risk with your life and in a motorhome it is illegal to be without a seatbelt fastened when the van is moving, also in even a minor accident and you are perhaps standing up you will not stop till you come up against an immovable object and even if this is only at a low speed you will probably experience severe injuries and at higher speeds you will probably continue on thru the windscreen and perhaps break the drivers neck as you pass on you way through.

I have had experience with this, in a passenger van rollover and my youngest son who, was the only one without their seatbelt on, appeared in the front with us for a second before disappearing back into the rear, by extreme good luck there were only minor injuries to only 2 out of 7 in the van, I look back on that day and realize if the outcome had been different, it could have changed our lives from that day forever, I had my 2 sons and my sisters 4 sons with me that day.

Don't ever take the extreme risks in a van or motorhome.

Cheers

David

"GOOD POST"

Of course there are those who think it will never happen to them.

Mate was behind a caravan on the Nullabor about 10 years ago.   There's   Ma in the back of the van  doing her chores !   even gave them a wave as they were fellow  campers.

A friend told me once that due to nagging from the kids, they did a short drive with her and the kids in the van. She said it was terrible, everything shook and rattled and bounced around. Since then she packs a lot more carefully, and NEVER has any of the family ridden in the caravan!

That's one situation I'll never be in since I'm travelling solo.

I believe it's far too dangerous to even contemplate, there is absolutely no crash protection in a van and to top it off it is illegal.

I would say the best place to be is in the front seat watching the scenery. Having had a van jack knife our car, there is no way I would ever want to be in the van. I never feel secure unless I'm in a seatbelt. PLUS as others have said, it is illegal. Glad you have made up your mind that it won't happen.

Has anyone ever seen the movie The Long Long Trailer, with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez?

You can get and idea of what happens by watching this movie. No I would never do this, apart from it being illegal anywhere, it's very dumb to try it.

Good movie, demonstrated the stupidy of some of the stuff that was legal in the old days and why it isn't now.

There is at least one manufacturer which has set up cameras in a van to show their product and how well it works on several road, track surfaces. This was to promote a newly designed suspension. May be there are others out there to find and view.

Thanks so much everyone. JRH, I didn't say I "wanted" to do it at all, I was making enquiries as to whether others do it or not and why, as per my original question. That is all. Thanks again. Julie

WE were camped near a river (fishing) and it started to rain so we decided to move to higher and better ground which was approx. 200 meters away so the wife said I will stay in the van watch our stuff whilst you move it.

Well I did so very very slowly and when I stopped and got into the van my wife was a shade of grey and vowed never to do it again.

She said the van creaked and it seemed to go at a terrific speed even though my speedo did not register any at all.

I did it years ago, Not me personally as I was the driver. Put three mates in the caravan in Bathurst went up to the top gate at Mount panorama circuit to pay entry for two people in car.

Yes we were being stingy and not paying for the three in the van, It worked and the three in the van didn't complain.

This was early 70's. It is the only time I have considered it.

We had been spoilt as prior years we arrived early and never went near the car till race over and never paid, They have been tougher as years gone by. Beer taken on circuit was unlimited in the old days.

Towed by HD holden x2 with Millard single axle caravan 16 ft. Those were the days.

That must have been around the time when we would put 2 in the car boot when going to the drive-in movies (remember those)
