Dogs and free camping WA

HI My husband and I are planning on travelling from Geelong Victoria to Broome via Esperance and Albany and Margaret river later this year has anyone out there done this with a fairly large dog and did they have much trouble finding free camping sites along the way

we have the camps Australia 5 book. But we also know from experience that some of the places in that fill up really early in the day and have also been told that it is very difficult to find anywhere around Broome either paid or unpaid to stay. We are planning on leaving in August.

any thoughts on this would be great Thanks V

We're about to embark on a similar trip with a Labrador Ravers and intend to bypass Broome, from all reports it's just another tourist trap and as you comment, accommodation can be a problem with a dog.

Thanks Santa had heard that's hard to camp around broome with or without pets but do want to have a look so maybe have to book ahead in a caravan park for that one. We have friends in Moonta.

Hope you have a great trip there are some great camp grounds out there.

Cheers and thanks again V

We are also about to embark on this trip from SA at the end of next week, taking our time to see the Eyre Peninsula as well. We have 2 Golden Retrievers so will keep posting about dog friendly sites.

s far as we know none of the caravan parks in Broome accept dogs, but the Roebuck plains caravan Park does. To be so close to Broome and miss it entirely is a loss, we found heaps of things to do there.
Ravers if you are leaving in August when did you think you would arrive in the Broome area? It gets very hot up there from Oct/November onward.

HI and thanks for the information. We probably will get up there early September and we do realize it will be hot and it's not really what we had planned but family matters have come up so we are unable to travel until then.

I wouldn't want to go all that way and then miss Broome it would be an awful shame. We went up the centre to Darwin last in 2011 (no dog then) and then across to Cairns it was a lovely trip and there were heaps of people traveling with

dogs and loads of free camping spots and caravan parks that allowed the dogs in. So we were hoping the same would be in WA anyway we will head off and hope for the best.

Thanks again Cheers V

Hi all,

I would give broome a miss, not very dog friendly. Lots of free o/nite parks in WA, some very good especially between Dampier and Perth, try to pull in before 3 to 4 pm, they tend to fill up after that. One great spot is Yardie Creek Homestead in Exmouth, fantastic for dogs.

Cheers

We have been staying with our Staffy at the PCYC grounds in Herbert Street, Broome for the last week. At the moment you have to have a pet to stay here but I have been told that when the other parks are full the Council gives the okay for the general public to stay here.

Its quite a large area, mostly grassed but has some red dirt and 3 pointed burrs which have been sprayed recently. Normal dog rules apply and everyone's pets seem well behaved. The amenities blocks are very clean. No washing machines but sinks for hand washing. Fairly quiet area with little traffic especially at night. Walking distance to the Town Beach with a dog area to one side, IGA Express, Pub and a few restaurants etc.

Three site options of full power $40pn, limited power $35pn - no aircon or heating appliances such as electric frypans, hair dryers, heaters etc or it will trip the circuit and turn everyone's power off, unpowered $30pn.

Hope this helps everyone,

Chevy

This is a reasonably new CP in Broome that allows pets, see;

http://www.broomesgateway.com/caravan-park

Warning on free camps/rest stops etc.  Keep your dog muzzled or on a lead, dingo/fox baits are laid in WA and sometimes these are picked up by birds and dropped in other bush area including rest stops etc.

Thanks Duh would never have thought of anything like baits being laid that's a great help I will most certainly make sure my dog is close to me at all times.

And thanks for the caravan park link will certainly look into that one

Cheers Ravers

After all the comments we heard along the way about Broome and dogs, our experience has been good. The Caretakers of the PCYC were very pleasant and we got in with no problems. You may have to go to the unpowered area until a powered site becomes available, but we decided to stay in the unpowered one anyway. The Solar panels did us well. Good Luck everyone. Wendycarlene

Thanks it for that it's really great to get all this information. We are heading off next week and really looking forward to our trip.  The PCYC sound really good so might try that do they allow people without dogs to stay there as we have friends travelling with us and

they don't have a dog.

Cheers Ravers

If you want to do any tours etc while you are in Broome give the vet clinic a call. They have kennelling facilities. Last time we were there we used these kennels so that we could do a few things that weren't so pet friendly. The facilities are clean, the pets are well cared for and you can even pick up your pet and take them for a walk if you want to.
