We don't use 'In line' filters.  Can't see much sense in filtering washing & washing up water.

I have an on tap purifier.  Purchased the US produced 'Instapure' brand because of price compared to the others.  They seem to do the same job as the others.

Get them at Big W often & the cartridges last for around 3 months & costs about $8 last time I got them.

Worked well for us over the last 5 years or so.

We have been using a B.E.S.T in line filter for about 3 years and had no hassles. It will filter down to one micron. One good thing about it is to clean it you just turn it around and run the water in the opposite direction. It's a portable filter with standard click fittings on each end. It's usually available at most caravan spares places. From memory it's good for about 5000 liters and costs about $100 but as far as I'm concerned money well spent. I have a policy that all water that we take on board the van is filtered, it's just not funny to get sick especially away from help.

We use the inline filter system also. Never can be to careful with the use of water in a lot of places . Better to be safe than sorry. Some terrible stories from people who have picked up tummy bugs , on their dream trip only to end up in hospital , from not spending a few dollars on some kind of filter.

Hi,

"Best In Line is well named". Would not be without it. You can also "polish" your on-board water by pumping from one tank to the next through the filter.

We had the bayonet type filter fitted for drinking water,,, but the cost of repalcement is now about $120,,, absolutely rediculous.

WE NOW USE THE FOLLOWING -

All water into tanks for last 5 year whether tank, river or bore is filtered with

AQUAPURE   AP117R 5 micron filter - they are white cylindrical shaped and filters and are about $20-25,, they last for 1000's of litres (obviously less if poor quality - then it doesn't go into potable water tank).

DRINKING WATER is filtered just before the tap with a new

CARBON BLOCK CART  CBC-5  1 micron  filter and cost of filter and 1st cartridge was $75 and cartridges are big and are carbon impregnated and cost $15-25.

My advice is to shop around and avoid high cost items when cheaper systems (with larger filtering surface area - ie what you want) are available. To the best of my knowledge reverse flushing a carbon filter doesn't flush the old bacteria out. Maybe some expert can confirm/deny this.

Sorry the formatting is gone here,,, don't know why.

Just on the subject of water filters,Giardia infection can be a big problem , for the traveller. Contracting it can accoure through putting any thing into your mouth directly or indirectly that has been contaminated with animial or human faeces, containing Giardia....Examples ,,, Rivers/ Streams/ Springs/ Pools/ Lakes. uncooked food Fruit & Vegies.Person to Person. And sorry to say folks sexual activites. So this is the reason it is a good idea to carry some Detol or some other kind of dry hand wash with you when travelling, as you wash your hands after useing the public toilet ,but you try opening most of the doors to get out near imposible to not touch some part of the door and WHAM you may have just picked up Giardia and not even realise it. Thats another reason we wash all our fruit and vegs befor we eat/ cook them. A mate contracted this while camping up in Broome a few years back he almost died.

Spot on herbie ,,, the door handles,, escallator rails and lift buttons were all good sources,,,, and hospitals are no exception.

Thanks everyone. We are looking seriously at the B.E.S.T. filters. Briche in the 3 years that you have used them, how often have you had to replace it? 5000ltr doesn't sound like very much. We tried to estimate how much we use, 2 x 95 ltr tanks free camping lasted about 4 days = 15 weeks approx. Mind you, when on mains we use the washing machine also, this would cut this short significantly. I believe that using it inline protects things like the water heater from heavy metals etc. We are in Esperance WA now and the calcium and lime content of the town water is very high, not good for water heaters or water connections in the van with the chance of clogging up.

Cheers
Lorraine
