Need to buy a new vehicle, but which one?

Hey all,

Could do with some advice from those in the know if you have time...

I'm towing a single axle, pop-top, 1460 TARE, 16'.    Thinking of a second hand small twin cab diesel ute, but unsure of what specs I need etc...don't really want to spend more than $24,000.

Ideas welcome!

Cheers, Sue

Welcome to the forum Sue, I will let others suggest your best option for a tug, what type/make of pop top do you have?

Do you have the ATM/GTM of the caravan ???

Hi Duh,

Thanks for the quick reply, it's a Pedigree Elite GLX '96 model, single axle, 16'. I'm not near the caravan at the moment but the specs online that I found are: TARE = 1250 Kg, ATM = 1950

Thanks for the caravan details Sue,

I can't help with the Ute for that weight, the Mitsubishi Triton may be an option, you would have to google their capacities etc.

I see on this Whirlpool link there are some divided opinions on different utes etc, see;

Hi Sue and welcome from me, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I have a Prado but when I grow up I want a Ford Ranger. I don't think you can get better. There are similar vehicles out there now but a canopy is a must IMO.

Sue , for my 2bobs worth , with that figure you could buy a reliable vehicle .

My suggestion . A Toyota HiLux crew cab 4X4 . why a toy mota . remember th old expression .

Buy a holden , you can get parts in woolies for em . Even though for nearly th same price , I got

my Kia , it only had 36k & still has 15mth new car warranty & I have 2.7t towing , it is 4X4 & 4cyl

diesel , so there are some out there .

Welcome to GN's

We were looking at getting a twin cab ute, out of all the ones we checked out the Toyota Hilux and the VW were top of the list. We ended up getting a Toyota Prado, it had more room inside it than a canopy, and we felt it was more secure.

Yep ours is a 4 cylinder  turbo diesel. We would never get rid of this now. We had a Landcruiser 6 cylinder petrol, it cost us a small fortune to run it. So we traded it in for a fantastic Toyota Aurion sedan. This is a brilliant car, so economical on fuel. This will become our daughters car when we leave on our trip.

Our friend who drives everything has just bought a BT-50 ute and is very happy. My brother who spent 30+ years with Ergon says they are now using the Ford Ranger utes which are the BT-50 rebadged.
Ergon are fussy and always test vehicles to the max.

G'day Sue,

We're looking at starting the grand odyssey later this year early next and we've been doing heaps of research into tugs and vans. My selection on the tug would have to be the Mazda BT50 (the Ford Ranger is a re-badged BT50 with some different panels and modified suspension but doesn't have the in cabin features). It's a 4X4 with a 3.5 tonne towing capacity from a 3.2 litre, 5 cylinder diesel motor. As your van is lighter than that one of the petrol options maybe more suitable. The reviews from both car writers and owners have been fantastic for all of the different variations.

Well thanks heaps to all replies.Lots of choice out there. I had thought the Ford Ranger as had a little drive of one when working with Blazeaid,. and it's not as big as some of the other vehicles Interesting to see it is a rebadged BT50. Does anyone know what  accessories are in the BT50 and not in the Ranger.

Regards

Sue A
