Re Gary, " don't shoot me i'm only the piano player".I think Gary and I have a similar sense of humour!!!. Re the fire arms, check with the licensing authorities in you home state ei the local police they will be able to tell you what you need to do to comply with the regulations. John
.Query why do you need to carry firearms??

Hello. I am expecting to be on the road soon, and am wanting to take my firearms with me, 12# shotgun and .22 cal Rifle.
Does anyone have any first hand experience / knowledge of the requirements when traveling across State Borders, and just as importantly, how does one satisfy gun storage as required by law, when in a caravan??
Good question because I'll be taking one or more as well and I'd like to know the requirements. I may ask the local criminals as they seem to be able to transport guns around quite freely.

The only real answer is to ring your state firearms branch for information. Last thing you will want is to be pulled up and arrested due to well meaning information gleaned from forums. Have said that bit it appears that states have a reciprocal agreement in regards to licences for a set time (unsure about WA). As to storage well we went to Darwin a couple years ago and our pistols were in a small bolted down safe in the vehicle and no problem but not sure with long arms though a van is really only a lockable box :).
Mate, why not carry two 8' kangaroo hide stock whips like I do....one in my vehicle and one in my Van and I know how to use them......I guarantee they will send any threatening animal/beast to full flight...and at night sounds like your pop guns anyway....dont need a licence....why anyone would want to carry any rifle/shotgun is beyond me and you would bring much grief on yourself from the Authorities with different regulations in each State.....I handed my weapons in after Port Arthur....what justification apart from farmers who do definitely need them, can any travelling person have for carrying them....particularly with the ammo having to be locked separate from the rifle and the bolt locked in another box as well.... Gary, I'm that accurate with a stock whip as most North Queensland kids from the 1950's were, that I could remove your piano players cigar before he could finish his rendition of 'Buffalo Girls won't you come out to-night'....Hoo Roo

You need to get permission from every state you go into and your got to get this permission before you enter the state and have a good reason to carry then and the same laws go in safety storage.
Got me. Why does anyone carry lawn bowls or golf clubs?
Gday...
HMMMMM .... each in their own liddle way are 'dangerous' weapons. Guns either to propel projectiles into a body .... or to use as a club. Lawn bowls and/or golf clubs ... OUCH ! ! they hurt the body as well when wielded with meaningful determination.

Weapons are only as dangerous as the person who uses them. As long as you DONT use them on other humans, I think that if they are just a tool , like a hammer or a saw. Its like a condom, you can,t use it if you don,t have it..........Bill
I for one, would like to be able to carry at least a .22 when travelling ? Much easier to shoot a wounded animal, than have to bash it over the head with a lump of wood if you can find one the right size to do the job.
Have had to do that a few times, and it is not at all pleasant !!!!!!
I hear what you say Keiron but in States like W.A. I believe you will not obtain approval to carry under any circumstances.... so do you turn around each time you enter a State with ever tightening and necessary gun carry laws....you will end up wishing you had not taken them IMO.......your vehicle is of course classed as gun carry...why not take all the various size fishing rods and reels and I feel you will forget all about your rifles back home.....river,beach,cliff, boat,kayak,billabong,lake......they are all waiting....in Victoria with a Seniors card you dont even need a fishing licence....and none are required in S.A. where I hailed from before I hit the road 3 1/2 years ago....Hoo Roo

No, you are thinking about the army, police or criminals. Licensed owners have firearms, not weapons.
Never conflate licensed owners with those who are a problem, that should be simple enough.
Gday...
I know and accept that guns don't kill people ... PEOPLE kill people.
However, and I will accept the flak from all for introducing comments about those whackers from the Yew Ess of Goddam Aye, but "those who are a problem" were licenced firearm owners .... and still shot all those kids at Sandy Nook.
I also apologise for continuing to drift this thread that asked a genuine and valid question ... and I will stop it now.
... and I do hope you get a sensible resolution for carrying your firearms interstate in ya van when travelling.
Cheers - John

No again. That is simply not right. The offender Adam Lanza was not licensed, did not have a permit and could not get a gun from a dealer though he tried. The gun laws worked. But a determined offender can work around any control, for example to make bombs, incendiary devices for arson, poisonous gas or whatever.
What Adam Lanza did was break into a properly designed, heavily padlocked safe, steal firearms and kill the licensed owner who happened to be his mother.
It wasn't the firearms laws that were defective. There are always some evil people in the world. He was a determined offender with a psychiatric condition that had not been advised to others (why not?). If anything this was a copy cat murder/suicide encouraged by idiotic media reports that sensationalise such terrible incidents.
Or care you making his dead mother who was his first victim responsible for the dreadful crimes of her son?
I am a pistol shooter and I compete at various clubs as I travel. Many will give you permision to camp at their club for a couple of days at very reasonable cost.
Most states will recognise your your firearms license (in my case Victorian) under the national gun laws for a period of 3 months the exception is WA where you must have a permit before you enter. This can be done online at no charge (though this may only be temporary). We have just been through this as we intend to pass through WA this year and it was an easy process.
Hope this helps.

Many thanks, from a sensible respondent. Happy travels, KB
We travelled for six months in 2006 and we didnt know where we would end up so i took all off my big bad dangerous weapons with us, we travelled through qld place of registration then NSW then Victoria then Tasmania, tasmania was a bit different only because of travel on boat i had to fill in a declaration that i was carrying firearms and declare them at arrival they(security)took possesion of them and locked away till arrival in Tasmania no problems at all as long as you do paperwork, before your trip, anywhere else there was no worries except for national parks of course i didnt use them but didnt say that i had them either just keep them locked away as if you were home and should be fine, when we travell in caravan a secured metal locked box more likely under bed or in a drawer system in your vehicle normal rules ,seems WA has some strange laws but if you apply long before you get there it will give you time to make other arrangements if required, as for all the comments as to what do you want to carry guns for well i dont target shoot like you but i do enjoy a rabbit or duck dinner and find when travelling and staying in rural areas many farmers are only too pleased for you to cull some ferals, oh shock horror, good luck just do a bit of research before you set off, by the way when i travelled to Tasmania i thought i was the only person carrying firearms but when retreiving them next morning there was a line of other dangerous gun owners waiting to collect there nasty guns
