can I, sorry.

Can anyone give me any idea of what to use to get spot tar/bitumen of the front of my Avan please, it is Aluminium and the effeted area is about 60cm diameter. It has been there for a few weeks now so may even be too late to save.

Kerosene on a rag then wash off with car wash , Year ago when they used a lot of spay bitumen lot of people would put dribble of kerosene in with the washing water .

Hi Doug,I used to work in the asphalt industry and as everyone else has said kerosene on a rag does the job..

You would be ABSOLUTELY CRAZY to use petrol.

Static electricity is everywhere and rubbing the car actually can produce it,,, you know what sparks you get sometimes when you get out of the car and touch the ground,, thats static electricity.

I worked with many fuels over the years including aviation gas with very high octane ratings (up 145 if I recall) and aircraft refuelling equipment both mobile and static,,, and I can tell you static electricity is everywhere in the atmosphere and machinery etc ,,, and it strikes when least expected.

Even small amounts of petrol on a rag can burn you quickly.

Use kero it's much safer with a higher flash point than petrol.

I had a some petrol in Gene that I needed to drain as why should I be drained of all energy and not Gene. So used that petrol to try on the Avan problem and guess what, it worked. I have done half already and will do the other half later.

I will now let Gene run until she is drained of all energy as I don't think she is going to get much use due to the way the Prado and Solar Panel performs.

The petrol would work for sure but only problem with petrol is very flamable and need to be very carefull

I have used butter in a emergancy , try useing the Bruce highway at the moment in places with out getting tar on tug / van is like winning the lotto.

Kero is the best one I have used, you can apply and leave it for a while to soften the bitumen then I wash off with more kero then truck wash then use "Armour All" spray on shine polish.

Makes cleaning easier next time.

Kero is easier on your hands and doesn't evaporate like petrol.

Thanks all for the tips and care to be taken using petrol. The job has now been completed with petrol and all is left is to wash the Avan with good old soap and water, well car wash anyway. Maybe a job for tomorrow, maybe. You can't rush these things.

We have had the motorhome washed Doug - grandsons came - one washed it, the other two have half polished it - Billeeeeeee has blacked the tyres, and has some special polish for the bullbar - looks lovely!! Has not been done so thoroughly since new!!!!!!!!

No, don't rush into it - ponder for a while, and do it when the time is right!!!!!

 Doug   It would be a good idea to check the sealant around the van edges to make sure the petrol hadsn't washed any off or softened it so that it sags in joints etc.

Petrol as a solvent will be very harsh on sealants (so will kero but not as harsh as petrol).

In my other life I had been turned out to fire started by miss use of petrol for wash motor vechiles
