Single Beds

Hi Curly,
I have a van wih single beds and I know exactly what you are referring to regarding the space at the head of the bed. Initially I found it difficult to get comfortable because I could not spread my arms out. I spent many nights in the beginning tossing and turning and just finding it generally difficult to roll over and get my arms in a comfortable position. Now, I am used to the restricted space and it doesn't bother me anymore. At one stage I swapped ends on the bed but that wasn't any better so I swapped back. I think is is the fact that there is a vertical wall on one side and there is no where to put your arm apart from laying it down your side. On the other side is another wall, not so high of course, but it restricts where you can lay your arm. A problem initially but now I sleep well.

Hi Everyone,

back to the single beds again, sorry but we only get one chance at this.

does anyone have a problem with the room at the head end of the bed, do you find it constricitng between the wall and the cupboard, my partner has been a machinery driver for a very long time and has very broad shoulders hence his concern about the room. I wont have to worry about wearing a track between the beds as we are having Lino lol.smile

Hi Curly,
What vehicle are you considering the single beds for? I have a HiAce, and I had a double bed built into the back of it with provision for taking half out for those trips when I will be on my own. However I never have taken it out, and realise now that although this would give me more "floor" space, it would actually reduce my under-bed storage space. And if I did fill the resulting floor space with stuff I might just as well enjoy having a double all to myself. After all, I wouldn't consider having a single bed at my house, so why would I have one in my mobile "house". Now, if only I could have an electric blanket..............

Welcome curly from us. We were advised to get a van with single beds quite a few years ago. They were right. Lots of advantages and a few disadvantages. Single beds give you more floor space. Single beds can be made up to suit the 'thermostat' of the individual. Single beds are easier to make. If head space is a problem, make the bed up the opposite end so feet are at the wardrobe end. We have no problem and find the chest of drawers between our beds helps block out some of the light if the other one wants to read longer. Apart from very very cold nights we have no regrets at getting single beds. But we would advise making sure you have good quality beds - we replaced ours with inner spring mattresses - just get your measurements right if you have to do that. We forgot to allow for the 'lip' around the edge of the mattress and it's a tight fit when making them. Hope this helps.

Hi Curly,
For what it is worth, we had singles in our Jayco Freedom and I loved them. The boss is a cold frog, and has doonas etc on in the summer time but I tend to kick everything off. In addition, there is more room, both in bed and in the van with singles.
Now we have a Sterling with a slideout double, and while we have only used it a couple of times, I definitely prefer the singles. (But don't tell Leesa)
Hope this helps you
Andy

The most annoying thing with c/ van beds ,is almost all of them are made for short people ,do not think the designers of c/ vans motorhomes have realised us humans have grown taller over the years. We had to bed to have our queen bed made longer, but to over come this issue ,we settled on an extension to the bed end, that pulls out an extra foot on slidders. In the end it has worked out well,as when the bed is not in use the end of the bed slides back and gives one more room to walk past or around the bed to make it. We have to use King fitted sheet on bottom and queen for top,so can never buy a pair of sheets ,always have to buy seperatle.
