While we are home, and still have one teenager here, we watch TV or DVDs, or play board games. Usually me or my daughter play computer games or surf the net.
But when we get to go on our travels, and it's just the two of us, it will be TV if there is reception, DVDs, board games, etc. I have hobbies like knitting, embroidery etc. Les will be reading through the caravan magazines or planning our next move. I just don't fancy watching TV day in day out.
So what do you do in the evenings after dinner, and before bed?

Guess it is a little different for both of us while we work, but when we take off for our brake between jobs or our 5 days off while working .
we both have hobbies such as fishingreally enjoy night fishing have cought my best catches after dark.We dive we snorkle we bush hike we just some times walk along the sand beside an ocean,we kayak,so for us there is never enough hrs in the day/ night if there is a few of us camped up we might play a game of cards. But i know if it ever came to the point where i or the wife was could not get out and about i would have to give this life away.I could not think of driving from one spot to the next and just sitting in from of my c/ van , that would drive me stir crazy. Some people never go see anything in any of the towns they pass through , just drive to the next free camp before the next person beats them to it, they have each spot mapped out to head to.They tell me all the time have to be at such and such by x date and time to get a spot,at such and such free/ low cost place. I ask myself ,,for god sake slow down and enjoy all this. ..Just my thoughts on our way we do things. We are never in to much of a hurry ,the sun will still come up in the morning and if the next free camp has been taken when we get there, we just nozzy on down to the next one. We have the Sat dish and two flat screen tvs but really not into tv other than the news ,Do listen to a lot of music though.....forgot to mention cannot miss Mrs Brown on Tv but it is a good fun night here in the park as we all sit outside and watch it together.

Yeah same here. I was curious as someone told me they would be watching TV, even thinking of getting a Satallite disc to get better reception....I just wondered why? I can think of heaps of things, like talking for one...which seems to be a lost art with some people. Sitting here shaking my head in amazement...
Herbie, yes I agree, during the day we are just going to have fun, enjoying everything, everyone, and everywhere. I want to see it all, so we will be doing the rounds of oz a lot I reckon to take it all in. I just don't plan on watching TV every night. Walking along the beach sounds great, and we will be doing that if we end up there. Fishing is also something I want to learn, and Les is eager to teach me. There is heaps of things to do....and we want to do them all.

Another nice thing to do is if there is a few of you camped together ,make yourself known to every one,we often end up have a cook up between us all like one will make salad another nibblies, another sweets nothing over the top but made with love you can always taste the difference i recon. hu hu. And us men cook the meat on Bbq. and of course a couple of beers .
.. I have been here (Boomi, NSW) for going on (2) weeks now and there is no local free-to-air and I've certainly not missed it. (Unless you have a high directional antenna) ..
The internet is still available and so is Telstra phone coverage .. (with a big receiving tower just over the road) ..
There is an abundance of fresh travellers moving through with the majority staying a few nights, so apart from enjoying the "people-watching" one even spends time with little group chats after initially meeting in the artesian pools .. most retire by 9 pm .. then its radio or music that sort of puts one to sleep .........
such a nice little bubble of lethargy it is .. ho-hum .. nite all !

I travel alone and have not watch Tv for over 4 years. Listen to the radio if close to the bus but normally walking around or sitting watching nature go past. At night I sit beside a fire if possible and when I am tired I go to bed. I get up at day break to get the best shots of the scenery so often in bed an hour or two after dark. I am often parked on my own and never travel far when I do travel. I enjoy a chat if there is others around but try to never interfere with other campers if they seem involved in what they are doing. Just walk past and say HELLO if they respond and offer a chat then I will stop. Other times I keep walking. Just enjoy what you enjoy, you will soon find out what makes you tick and go for that. Regards Brian

I haven't started yet but I expect to be organizing all the pics I've taken during the day, assembling them into an album, and updating the journal for the website. There may be occasions when I'm enjoying a campfire chat with fellow campers or going for a wander along a beach by moonlight or just pondering life under the stars. Bugger TV and DVDs (except for news, current affairs). I'm like Brian in terms of photography - it's important to be up at sparrow's for the best light, which means early to bed, early to rise. One thing I'm certainly NOT expecting is boredom.
Since we are at home now we tend to have the telly on before bed and on most weekdays we come down off the day with a hit of Mash. I have the whole series on my TV
Mash is my favorite TV show and although I've seen all of them before I don't mind seeing all 251 episodes again, so it lasts quite some time.

I thoroughly enjoy being without the TV when away in the van. I'm sure thats why I always come back so refreshed and not so stressed. I do have a 12 volt especially for the van but have never used it.
When at home I will be sitting in front of the TV with the laptop on my laptop. lol Or maybe doing some puzzles, reading or crotchet. Not a lot else you can do at that time of the night.
The tv is relatively new to us when we are travelling so we enjoy the news and a few favourite shows when we can get a signal. With a campfire, that's where we are, with daylight we are outside walking/talking, with cold rainy nights its a game of scrabble, reading, sorting photos on the computer, early to bed.
We seem to eat later than when at home. By the time happy hour is done, and dinner is cooked, eaten, chatted over, and dishes done, its always later than I expected. lol
As we have dogs, a nice easy walk is always needed, and we settle into a read, or ipad play for a while. There's always foxtel on ipad if we can get it. Occasionally a jigsaw puzzle on the go.
When we're ready, last minute pee run with the dogs, our evening ablutions, quick tidy of the van, ...............next thing it's morning.
Someone once asked my wife what do you do all day if you are not at work or out doing something, her reply was , the same as you would be doing in your house, only on a smaller scale.!!!!
Big Gorilla I have the same thinking has you , We have sex nearly every night of the week , Nearly on Monday , Nearly on Tuesday , Nearly on Wednesday ,Nearly on Thursday , nearly on Friday , Nearly on Saturday and Nearly on Sunday .
I am only allowed to think about that behaviour on my birthday/ easter and christmas/ and if i am very very good fathers day.
Regards Herbie.
Walking away from bowling club,,,,, after watching a lovely young bottom,,, er lady,,, bowling a mate said "go on you can't remember what its like".
I said yes I can remember- THAT'S THE PROBLEM. lol

Dont think about it just do it, what ever it is, thinking about what I am gunna do or what I want to do makes the hours go even quicker and that I dont want.
Then again before bed I allways have a think about what I plan to do the next day, then fall asleep and then its morning and have to think what I plan to do all over again.
Hey Grams, come up with another idea to pass the night away..sit out side and count the stars, as you see a hell of a lot more camped out away from all the city lights. And when you finish counting them ,you might like to start to join them together, you know like dot to dot. ( now i am just being silly )......And thanks Grams for the soup recipe was yummy had it with some toasted sour dough bread for dinner tonight. When you try some of the other recipes out in that book what about posting them on here in RECIPES
Regards Herbie.

Hmmmm...when I am at home, I usually am so 'finished with the day' by evening that I wish I were in bed; but I do 'computer stuff' for a while anyway.
When I am outside, travelling, in the playground, I love to sit back in a comfy chair, cup of something suitable nearby, and look at the stars: watching and 'learning' from them, I get my sense of place etc...its always a comfort to me.
The thing is.... when you look up on a clear night...there's NO limits, either to the imagination or the view.....that's hard to beat IMHO, whether alone or not (even if you need a good fire and/or a blanket)

In life it is important to know when to stop arguing with people
and simply let them be wrong.
We watch dvd's mainly comedies to get a giggle or three in before bed.... we seem to be going to bed earlier than at home and get up sometimes before the sun rises.....
I just wanted to say I can think of heaps of things to do in the evenings. I was a little shocked by the person I spoke to who said they wanted Satillite TV set up in there van for when they go camping, as TV was important to them...I don't get it. I can take it or leave it here at home, but being away on our trip I can think of many many things to do, and TV isn't one of them, unless its raining and you can't go outside, but there are still things to be done besides TV.
Herbie, thanks for that, glad you liked the soup. I'll add some more recipes to my thread.
I'm with you Ellenajoel, star watching away from city lights is a great way to get a sense of place and perspective. It makes all the bullsheet that goes on daily on this planet seem so juvenile.
We bring along a small 14" LCD TV (runs on 12v) mostly for information - i.e. to watch the daily evening news, and more importantly TOMORROWS WEATHER, then the following current affairs show. Several times a week I allow the Managing Director to watch an hour of one of her favourite soapies (while I read a book or go out into the annexe to use my laptop). The TV also has a DVD player built-in, so we can bring a few of our personal DVDs for 'a rainy day' - and recently at Mount Warning and Kingscliff we had 12 out of 14 days with continuous torrential rain !!!
Also handy to watch the morning news at breakfast time (but only for about half an hour while making and eating breakfast and having a morning starter coffee). Provided it's not abused, a little TV can help to make your camp stay just a little more homely.
My two-bob's worth !
Edit
Just a bit more - we also carry a small stereo headset and a 3-metre extension. If one wants to watch TV and the other sleep, the headset comes out, so the sleeping partner is not disturbed. Also when using the laptop in the annexe, while the Managing Director is watching her soapies in the van, I can use the headset - now this is great, I can now lay legitimate claim to 'Selective Deafness'.
