RE: Personal safety whilst free camping

HI Keiron,

I understand your concerns but I think if you stick to what seem to be the rules of free camping like find somewhere early enough to see if others are stopping too, introduce yourself and see what they are like, don't camp just outside big towns Friday Saturday nights, and most of all use your common sence. I am travelling alone most of the time and I have always heeded my mothers warning. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it!! I figure I've survived this long on instinct and common sence perhaps I will survive my adventures as well. Like you I do have my OMG moments but I am human. Good luck and enjoy.

Hi Keiron, my wife & I have been on the road for almost 4 years now & at no tine have I been threatened or felt threatened. That said I must admit my wife has felt quiet uneasy on only a few occasions. We very seldom stay in caravan parks & have loved every minute of it & I hope you do to. My only advice is if you or your wife do not feel comfortable or safe then simply move on. This is a big land & there are so many places to enjoy I hardly see the need to stay in one where my enjoyment is curbed by uneasy feelings. You are the only person who can determine your feelings for personal safety, so just go with your own instincts & enjoy the road.

Having free camped on my own in a small tent or simply in my sleeping bag under the stars quite a few times over the years, I have never experienced worse than been woken by a wet nosed dog.  The locations included North Africa and Asia.  If anyone feels Australia is so frightening, hotels would seem to be their best option.

Oh, I must admit I did use discretion one time: I was planning to set up a couple of fishing rods and sleep by them in my bag, but then I noticed the sign that mentioned crocodiles.  hmm
