This is all fantastic info thanks everyone.

Steve, the choice 'always' will be yours to make.

For info, my parents moved into an over 50's gated community and the next home (beyond an adjoining fenceline) was the fulltime gardener's residence only....that's why my parents liked their choice of home.

Anyway, about 6 months after my parents settled, this nextdoor residence was sold; without any notifcation or appparent advertising/RE agent involvement etc; to a relative of the manager of the gated community......(feel free to draw your own conclusions here)bleh

Then the new owner promptly rented it to rowdy young people with a barking dog....truly.

My point is...there will be LOTS to consider (even beyond the heap of great info given here by fellow forum folk)...

I wish you well in your decisions.

We to have thought about that, but decided just to down size the house and with the extra money we hope to upgrade our caravan and car. after all we go away for the winter months and come back in spring, so will only be in the house six to seven months of the year.

Our families know that if a motorhome is found out there somewhere with two skeletons (with big grins on their faces) - come and claim us!!!!

That seems a better option to me Steve.

For me, I'll most likely have to go into what used to be called a Housing Commission unit in Qld. Not sure what it's called now, but I know it'll be a seniors one bedroom unit. I like the idea of moving to a small country town, but I can't/don't want to move away from friends, doctors, and hospitals.

 Hi Beth,

It is now or was when I worked there up until 4 years ago Housing Qld although still referred to nominally as Housing Commission (old habits die hard).

It has all changed or had then, from where you used to have your name on a waiting list and waited for your name to get to the top. It was restructured so that people most in need were classified i.e. A,B,C,D,E,F. or suchlike. Therefore those in category"A"for argument sake would have first call and so on down the list. If you were in category F for argument sake you may never qualify. If you were  thinking of this option I would suggest you visit your nearest Housing Qld area office and get properly informed.

PM me if i can help with any info.

Cheers,

John

thanks for that info John.

I'd been on the list for many years but every time they checked up on me, I said I was okay where I was...which has been true for the past 8 years. I was probably classed as F because of this, and when I rang them recently, I'd been taken off the list 4 years ago!

But I feel the rising damp etc here is detrimental to my Asthma, so I'm trying to talk myself into moving. As much as I want to stay here because it's very cheap and my landlord is great, I really need to bite the bullet. But I'm not prepared to pay the high price that over 50's villages are in my neck of the woods. If I did that, I couldn't afford to travel anymore. no

So the next best thing is Housing Commission. (Yes, I still tend to call it that.) As you may remember John, I live in Logan, so it's a bit hard to find a decent suburb in Logan which has seniors housing. My brother works at the Council and said stick to the eastern side of the highway.

So my next move is to ring the department again and find out the suburbs of Logan and Brisbane South which have senior housing.

 Hi Beth,

You are not restricted to Logan in your application.

PM me if you wish and I'll try to give you a bit more info.

Cheers,

John

We have been looking at retirement villages for a few years now and the contract docs are 40 pages!!..no new pets..refurbishment costs of $10,000 ..exit fees of 1/3 of your buying price..capital gains of 50% to them..monthly fees of about $270..rates of about $1800 a year..gas , water and electricity costs of about $2000 a year..the main prob was one of us moving into low or hi care and the extra costs involved..

an exit fee and refurb costs are payable if u want to move to another unit in the same village..only one dog allowed (we have 2 chinuanas)..no replacement dogs if yours passes on (can get a doctors certificate tho for this)..

.you pay for their solicitor fees on entry as well as your own solicitor!!...ad infinitum...

one village had sardines on toast for the evening meal of serviced apartments!!..

it's all about money for the shareholders and do anything to lure in new residents...

.I look at the village and figure they get my ingoing money interest free and all I'm doing is paying rent till I pass on..

what happened to the 20 square home 2 car garage nice garden I had and I exchanged that for one in a the village's 11 square home , in which I can't fit our king size bed or lounge furniture in or all the hobby gear I have for a miserable small 1 car garage, handkerchief garden I "downsized "to??...it's very depressing..

SO we won't be moving..we made a pact that if one of us passes on the other can make the choice..caveat emptor folks

What about the "Home Parks" on the central coast do they have the same issues as the other types. In the home parks, you don't own the land from what I understand..
