Pauline, I think Cindy could sense from the few replies that did get through, that it was heading towards, a heavy Political debate, and could easily get out of hand ???
I to have strong Views and opinions on our open border policy, which is also increasing our population at an alarming rate, ??
But !!! I agree with Cindy, this forum is the friendly forum, and should be kept religion and politically free ??
I find plenty of other sites on the web, where i can tell everybody else, why i am right ?? and they are wrong [ imho ]
How could this topic get out of hand ?? It is a true fact , nothing sinister in talking about a subject that is a fact. I thought it was interesting to know how many people we have in this beautiful country. ...Would it be any different than saying USA or where ever has x population. if someone asked that question on here before visitting that particular country.
Australia has the fastest population growth in the developed world.
Annual population growth rate of 1.7%, or 1,048 people per day. Faster than India which is 1.4%!
The overall growth in the worlds population was 1.1%, well behind Australia.
Migration accounts for Australias population growth. Net overseas migration accounted for 60% of Australias population increase last year. The proportion from births dropped from 46% to 40%.
Yep, 23M... and to think I'm not responsible for a single soul. Actually, given the option these days, I'm not sure I'd want to bring another person into this world. It didn't seem so scary when I was younger, but it is now.
Have to agree with you there Gary...........what I was trying to get at in my other post was how quickly the population seem to have doubled without us realising it was happening.
It's all that bonking business after Johnny comes marching home, Pauline. But I have to say Oz is a better and more interesting place than it was when I was a kid. I'd never heard of pizza let alone san choy bau . It was all fish 'n' chips and stew. And chicko rolls, of course. Hehe. Now there's a plethora of food, wine, fruits and veg, restaurants (remember Cahill's Tea Rooms?), festivals, music, art, fashion, sports and all things cultural.
We need to consider our food production as our population goes on increasing.... even without immigration the birthrate has risen over the last few years. Lets try and support our Australian farmers and buy local produce instead of imported.
We always try to buy direct from the farmers and if a farmers markets we support it 100%
I was listening to land line the other night, they were reporting from Murray Golbourne Valley regarding how so many farmers are just ploughing their fruit trees into the ground. They just cannot continue with all the fruit and vegies allowed to come into our country. So wrong that we can send our own farmers to the wall, while we prop up other farmers from all over the world.

John after your post ree Australia fastest growing population in the world I google it and found we are number 127 in the world reference Wikerpida
You did not read what I wrote which was 'developed world'.
It would be misleading to compare Australia with undeveloped countries that have no education, no contraception, are ruled by superstition and have high death rates, especially of women.

Australia produces excellent quality consumables... esp meat, f&v and grains....and the extra cost for the consumer (i.e. all of us) is so those that actually do the hard work; and their families; get something for their efforts (albeit a minor $ reward in most cases).
Indeed, this is a fundamental way to keep the 'backbone of this nation' strong, beyond current population numbers...
(whilst "digging it up, shipping it somewhere" is not a sustainable solution IMHO...)
