WoW how lucky you were to find out about this,befor they scammed you BIG time. That is way i gave up useing EBay and paypal a long time ago.Do not need the hassle wondering if and when it is going to be my turn to get done over .Just too many savy crooks out there today.

I disagree, with decent (not free ware) antivirus software a firewall and good password habits shopping online is a doddle, I've been a regular for over 10 years and never had a problem.

I use Ebay, Paypal and shop with Amazon and others regularly. smile

I agree with Santa , i have 334 transactions with ebay alone an nary a problem with malaware or virus and as I stated earlier cleaning out your temp files regularly helps as well.

I bought something on eBay last night. No problem. But from time to time I've had scam emails pretending to be PayPal. I delete them right away. I often get similar email from crooks pretending to be my bank, my ISP or whatever else all trying to trick me into giving away my ID. I find them easy to spot. Bad grammar is a dead giveaway. Also, my ISP allows me to check my email before it reaches my computer, so I can delete anything suspicious before I download.

My daughter was sent an email from paypal congratulating her on her $400 purchase. She got onto them right away and said she hadn't purchased anything. All was sorted very quickly. My son uses ebay all the time and has had no paypal problems.

I wanted to buy a few things off ebay but found even using paypal, one needs a credit card or a Visa Debit card, which I dont have. So I got an Australia Post load & go Visa Debit card. When I intend to buy something, I just slip down to the PO and load it with whatever amount I need and pay that way. Too easy, and no-one can try to use my paypal account when it's empty!

I use a card that has very little money on it around $50 and if I want to buy I just add enough to pay. But I was charged a dishonor fee today of $15 as there was not $3099 in the account.. so i have to take proof to the credit union and they should cancel the charge otherwise paypal will refund.

yep gary I get those all the time they go straight into my junk mail fol;der andf I just delete all unread.....

I use internet banking too. I was a bit wary at first, but I've had no problems.

And let's face it, I'm a pensioner, there ain't much money in there anyway! disbelief

A friend of mine checks her bank account every day. She reminds me of the childrens rhyme..something about the king was in the parlour counting his pennies,,,can't remember exactly. I don't think she checks it every day for security reasons though, but for admiring the numbers!

It doesn't have to be the internet,we used our card at a local IGA,that night $4000 was taken out in England,did not know until next day when I went to pay a Drs visit and the card wouldn't work.Rang the bank they had put a stop on the card, all money was deposited back to us.We later found out that 11 cards had been skimmed that day. Ebay with PayPal no worries,over 100 transactions.

Another disliker of free software. So what anti-virus programme are you subscribing to. Very few of the paid for ones are as good as the best free ones.

PC&TA did a survey of them in their March issue. Out of 16 progarmme surveyed there were only 4 that scorrec a full 6 stars. There were 3 that scorred 3 stars, one of those was Avast Free. At the bottom of the list McAfee scorred 3 stars and Micro$oft Security Essentials scorred a whole ONE.

Why do some of the freebies rate so high? Well some companies who produce paid for security systems for businesses allow private users to use some parts of their suites free for personal use. I have Avast on my machines an the cook has AVG on hers. Both those companies produce suites but alow the anti-virus programme to be used free for personal use. AVG is slipping in their ratings so I will have to swap that for Avast on the cooks machine.

Santa, if you or some of the others like to let me know what anti-virus you are running I will let you know the rating of it.

We all have opinions Peter, I don't dislike freeware, I simply don't rate it very highly, If your happy to put your system at risk for the sake of $25 a year go for it, it's your choice, use whatever AV software that suits you.

As far as knowing the rating of my AV software, I'm not sure how will this help me? I know it works very well, thats all that really matters.

Just keep in mind as with most things in life you get what you pay for. wink

I bought Kaspersky 2013 online from I offer and it works fine cost me less than $10 as it is a file only. Updates daily, checks my computer each time I log on.

Kaspersky certainly has a good reputation, have never used it.

Just relying on one suite is not such a good idea either, be it freeware or paid subscription software. I use a couple of different programs on my computers eg MalwareBytes, SpybotSD, Hijackthis and some paid for suites such as TrendMicro or AVG full version. I have also found Avast free version to be good on my shed computer and also on my android phone and Asus eeepad. The problem is that some paid for software will make you uninstall any freeware stuff before it will let you install it's own product. Then you have to re install the others afterwards. Can be a real PITA

I use Linux Operating Systems and software and if that's an example of getting what you pay for then give me free every time.

Thanks all. Seems to have stopped for the moment, I have tried to have several antivrus programs but I find they don't like each other and I have to switch one off to use another and so forth so tend to stick to one that is paid for and updates daily and run full scan at least once a week.

Good news the browser on your Ipad is a cut down version and so does not hold such files. Also the operating system is totally different to PC's ( Not Windows ) and so attacks on the system it uses is very uncommon

The best way to keep your computer clean of temp files and all the other rubbish that collects over time is to use Crap Cleaner.

Download the free version fro here http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download There are quite a few imitations, so only use this one, the others all actually have crap that comes with them...

If you get into the habit of running it just BEFORE you shut your PC down each time, all that rubbish never gets a chance to run on your system.

It's easy to run it as well, just right click on your recycle bin and click run crap cleaner and it's done silently on the background.

EVERY PC should have this program, it's the very first thing I install for anybody I help out with PC problems.

I use eBay and PayPal a lot, I have over 1,100+ feedback as a buyer and seller. I get the odd email from PayPal...scams as they never have my full name in the heading, only PayPal do this. I do go in regularly to check that everything is fine.

I love buying online, living in a small town we have nothing, so everything I buy I do online. Most online stores (not eBay) have PayPal now, making paying for anything so much easier.

As for viruses, having a MAC I never get them. I love Apple.

CCleaner is a good tool, but it won't find trojans or malware. For that you need a proper antivirus program, and then that won't find all of them, this is why it's a good idea to use a couple of different software packages. And yes the freebies will sometimes pick up stuff the "reputible" paid for software won't see.
