Will hit the road in August... all going well!! (fingers and toes crossed!!)
Have been invited away with family for xmas/new year to Lennox Bay, NSW. Have put our name down for a spot in a caravan park there. Hopefully that will come up. If it does we will then need to move on beginning January... so.... where to??
No real destination in mind but I do have family I want to visit in Melbourne so maybe head that direction.
My question is ... how hard is it to find free camping spots that time of the year? anyone got any nice spots between NSW and Melbourne? (I know... its a big gap!! :))
Maybe we should google and book the odd caravan park in between? Any ideas guys???

Not too worried about somewhere to stay in Melbourne... Cousin has lovely flat driveway! Just the bits between lower NSW and Melbourne.
One that might be of interest Buffy is Ariah Park in from Wyalong. If you don't need to use any of their facilities it is free. If you want to plug into power and use the showers etc its $10.00 a night. I stayed there for a week in January, very comfortable.

Can't help you with that side of the country, but I would be hesitant to book too far ahead, as then it puts pressure on you to be at a certain point at a certain time, and the trip becomes a chore rather than an enjoyment.
Maybe better to have a couple of choices of caravan park in the general direction you are going, then ring them and book the day before if you are sure you are going to be there the following day. Much less stress that way.....
Won't hurt to book further ahead if you don't have to part with any money and you are able to cancel without penalty though, but make sure you do cancel if not going to be there.
On the NSW/Vic border there are heaps of frre camp spots along the Murray river around Cobram where I am at the moment. I'm heading out on Monday down river towards SA and hope to just camp by the river along the way. Very scenic with the chance of fish. Andy
Have you decided if you are travelling the inland track or keeping to the coast, here on the NSW south coast there are a few low cost/free camps that come to mind eg North Head primitive ground at Moruya, Worldrons Swamp between Mogo and Moruya, Mystery Bay which is closer to Narooma. Then further south there is the Mimosa/ Mimosa Rocks National Park although I think there may be a ballot for sites in some national parks. I think Gerty Dancer may know of a few others, there is a lovely spot on the Shoalhaven River (I think) between Bungendore and Braidwood on the Kings highway, we haven't stayed there but have passed it often on our way to Canberra. hope that helps some. cheers Capricorn
Actually, we are closer to Nowra on the south coast, and we haven't found any decent free-camps at all, except tent-camping in the National parks. Being just that bit closer to Sydney everything seems to be caravan parks with lotsa permanents or day-use only. If we find any nice quiet spots I'll post them. Its a bit disappointing in a quiet sea-side town that we cant recommend a spot close by. Even our front yard is full of our own caravan!
There's another spot on the Shoalhaven river on the Turpentine road near Nerriga which is beautiful, its called Oallen Ford. The bridge has a 5 ton limit. We often stop there for a picnic lunch enroute to Canberra and have seen various campers there.
