Hi Milo, I have just ordered a new Jayco optimum with dual, slide outs and from what I have seen its great. It will give me more room in the lounge and the bed area. They have come a long way since the early days of slide outs and now much more stable.
Hi Milo We have slideouts both sides. You get fantastic room inside but it cramps up a bit when closed. I sometimes evny the simplicity of those without and often wonder what I would do if they get stuck but the boss loves them so whatever to takes to keep her happy and on the road. you can se a bit more on outs here. http://thegreynomads.activeboard.com/t50972652/our-rig/
We looked at a few of these too, the extra room was impressive when they are opened...when closed they seem more cramped than an ordinary van. I too wondered if they got stuck going in or out...it's not like you can drive it into town to get it fixed. This worried me more than anything, and we opted for the ordinary caravan.
And yes they do take up more room when you camp, so you have to watch out for trees etc.
Can be a problem in some van parks when out and the roll out awning deployed some site just aren't bigger enough to cater but the concept is good. It's like 5th wheelers and big MH they want to put you down the back miles away from everything

We have a Winnebago with a slide out. Can't say anything negative about it. We had more problems fitting our old camper trailer on a site than the Winny. They are cramped with the slide in but that only occurs when we in the drivers seat when travelling. It literally takes 30 seconds to put the slide in or out.
